This topic is completely and utterly a waste of time, but it's something thats been on my mind for a while so I really wanted to share it with all my game dev homies. I've never really noticed many girls that are into game development because its mainly a guys trade so to speak. I mean I have seen the occasional hardcore gamer girl, but those are very few and far between if you get my drift. The few girls who are into games already know the daunting tasks required to develop them, and the girls who don't know about the man hours it takes to make one are not that interested period. So I'm thinking to myself, what (if any) girls would be impressed by a game developer? Then it hit me,... What field of media is there a lot of girls trying to make a name for themselves??? Female Film Students. Yes, girls who want to make movies, and a lot of them are really really hot too. Maybe they would be impressed by games. If you think about it, they might very well be impressed by games. When I wrote this list I wasn't trying to degrade film students in any way or under estimate they're craft. I'm just listing some possible ways they might be impressed by a game developer. 1.) Making a movie is almost as simple as pointing a camera and pressing the record button,... Making a game is slightly more complicated. 2.) When using green screen in a movie, a lot of film students can only use a picture of something else, or a video of some other time and place to fill in the green. But a game developer knows how to use 3D software to fill that green with out of this world effects :) 3.) Face it, even indie games have better soundtracks than independent films. 4.) Games are graphically more impressive than independent films. Hell, games are more graphically impressive than a lot of real movies too. Feel free to add to this list. Basically what I'm getting at is a game developer can probably impress a female film student in so many ways. And possibly provide aid that nobody else on they're film crew can. Notice I'm not sexist at all, I love women, HEHE. So just out of curiosity, does anyone else feel this way at all?

None of your points are valid. You seem to not have much actual knowledge about cinema. And in the case of point two, all you'd need is someone with a 3D modeling program, not someone who works on games.

Sure, the technical act of starting and stopping the recording is very easy. As is the technical act of pressing keys on the keyboard and moving the mouse to tell the computer what to do. But neither constitute creating a movie or a game.

This isn't specific to games. There are tons of graphics artists in the film industry that probably know nothing about making games but can do killer 3D graphics and animation nonetheless (think Pixar, Dreamworks, etc.).

I'm pretty sure that real-life images captured by a camera are a lot more "graphically impressive" than polygonal models generated by a computer. And if you're comparing commercial game graphics to CG images in independent films, then it's an unfair comparison.

I don't really feel that stereotypes have anything to do with how much you can impress a girl, since with confidence and determination you could be living with your parents and still impress women. I think they made a movie about it.

Yeah, the numbers make sense, but the art is difficult.

1. No, it isn't. It's that easy to make a bad movie, but it takes a lot more to make a good video.

2. ???... Chances are, some sort of 3D software will be used in either case.

3. It definitely depends on the game. Take a look at Mop of Destiny from 4E5. That is the best sound I've heard from an indie game. It's better than the soundtracks of a lot of commercial games, for that matter. Quality differs vastly.

4. Um... When you can give me shaders that look like real fire, waves that actually look like waves, realistic human motion, and a whole list of other things, I'd have to say that real life graphics > indie game graphics. (in terms of photorealism, which is what it seems you are referring to with "more graphically impressive")

In summary, I don't feel that way. I may be mistaken. Make a 3D video game for yourself. Make a movie for yourself. Compare.

Maybe you're thinking of YouTube Videos vs. 1-person indie projects.

If that's not so, then, I'd have to agree with everyone else.

I'm not going to pick on you for not understanding film. It's a common occurance for people outside of a field to assume simplicity in how it works. I see it all the time.

There are a lot of girls involved in the more artistic and marketing side of game development.

All the gamer girls I know are pretty hardcore, pun definitely intended.

The majority of male gamers I know don't even know those details of game development.

It's impossible to make a generalization to answer that question because the types of people that make up game developers are so varied. Agree?

no no I didn't mean a hollywood blockbuster. I know those guys are hardcore with a talent for cinema. Look at the credits on the last few pages of a game manual, then watch the credits roll when a movie ends. Kinda puts that into perspective. Not to mention that making movies is both mental and physical.

Ultimately this whole thread was a really bad idea. I don't think I had my head all that far up my ass though, I was merely brainstorming about the possibilities of how a game dev might be able to look good in the eyes of a film student, particularly female. But I had no intention of "scoring" as one of ya'll put it, nor was I downing any aspect of the motion picture industry.

So hopefully that helps to clearify the point I was trying to make. In all honesty, yes films are a far more difficult trade to get involved in than games. But I think one of the things that makes games more interesting is that they the things on the screen can be controlled in real time. And believe it or not technology is always getting better :)

NOW, please don't make it any worse. just let this thread die.

just to add to that, ya'll were right and I was wrong. I have swallowed my pride but I know I cant fix all this because the damage is done. But for what its worth I apologize and I promise I'll think next time before I speak. Hope theres no bad blood between us.

That's fine. If there's a place to make stupid comments, it's in the Lounge. (wait for the irony...)

I believe I speak for many when I say that there have been many worse comments and discussions.
