I was wondering how 4 pane view ports are created in c#. I know one way of doing it but it has an unprofessional look. I would like some suggestions on the best way to create views for a CAD application.

You might look into docking libraries that provide a similar look and feel to VS 2005.

I've used SandDock, a reasonably priced .NET docking library, in a CAD system. It does not have every feature that I'd like, but it has excellent design time support and a decent API. The biggest difficulty I've had is adapting it to persist N number of views that may be created at runtime.

I looked briefly at the open source project DockPanel Suite, but I have not used it.

The only feature you may want for a 4-pane layout that I have not seen is resizing in the center in all directions (not just horizontal/vertical splitter sizing).

Google '.net docking' for more options (mostly commercial products).

I've used the DockPanel Suite that slack suggested. It works really well and creates docking panels very similiar to the ones in VS 2005. I was happy using it.
