Hi Need some quick help! I have some uni work to do regarding SQL databases, scemas and stuff, and I thought rather than just guessing, I may as well create it and export the scema... and test out the sql scripts for real! Anyway, I have multiple contracts with MS including MSDN and partnership, so I have developer, standard and enterprise copys of SQL server, however when I installed Visual Studio 2005, it auto installed SQL server 2005 express, and I have no idea how to use it. All I really want is enterprise manager / a interface that I can type the SQL querys to and create a few tables and relationships e.t.c. I was wondering if anyone can help me as to how I can do this, or should I uninstall SQL express and install one of the other SQL editions? and would it be fully linked to VS? Thanks

You can install a program called "SQL Server Management Studio Express" that will work with the Express engine. Other versions include the management studio by default when you install the client tools.

If you genuinely need a more powerful engine, use the Developer edition - it is equivalent to the Enterprise edition but has a limited simultaneous connection count.

The Express engine is very good for basic (and even somewhat advanced) database work so you may not need the other versions. Should the need to scale up arise later, it is relatively easy to do so.

Also, the other editions of SQL Server 2005 will work with Visual Studio just like the Express edition.

For 85% of the projects I've worked on, SQL Server 2k5 Express would have been more than enough. I know of production systems that are running on proprietary databases that are far more limited than SQL Server 2k5 Express, and they PAY for it.

Thanks for the tips and advice.

I am looking for SQL Server Management Studio Express now.

I do not neeed anything really advanced, and I would rather not install/uninstall sql now for just a quick project!

++ to everyone who has posted here! (edit - nik02, you got +4, sorry capn_midnight, already rated you up in the past, tried again but it did nothing)
