Hello I'm currently looking for a good task list tracking system, which will allow me to quickly jot down tasks I am doing or will do (or will never do but like to), and allow me to prioritise these easily and quickly. I used to use the to-do list plug-in on the Google Task bar, and this worked will (ish), until I came into work one morning and the bar had lost all it's settings and all my tasks :( I'm looking for something that would ideally be web based (that is ideal, but as it is my work server, they are against putting up random scripts and SQL databases just for one guy!), and something that allows me to tag these tasks easily with extra information, colour information and anything else I might find useful. I've used excel previously (comments for extra information, colours, priorities etc.) but thats just to heavty weight for my needs, and I'm looking for something smaller and simpler. So, does anyone have any suggestions or pointers to applications or tools they use? Thanks Spree

Wordpad?

Lightweight, easy to use, ubiquitous, files can be stored on network shares with no special infrastructure, easy color-coding/formatting, etc.

I use ToDoList.

It's not web based, but it's lightweight, fast, and simple to use.

I have a custom-made, lightweight scrum-style burndown on a spreadsheet for my personal project work. It not only tracks 'todo' items nicely, it also keeps you going at a reasonably consistent pace.

It's pretty light weight. Allows you to sort according to priority, and notifies you when a particular task is due (down to the minute). Hides in the system tray when you aren't using it.

I'd recommend ToDoList, too. The advantage of it is that it saves the list in an XML file, which is very Versioning system friendly format - you can add it to Subversion (or any other) repository, and let it track the changes/history of your list - the file will never get lost!

I use a whiteboard. I know you're looking for a software solution, but I just thought I'd throw it out there as an option you may not have considered.

- My team uses FogBugz for tracking bugs and a wiki for shared tasklists & external documentation.

I use a plain old notebook for anything that doesn't belong in one of those two places. It has the advantages of being persistent, portable and not taking up valuable screen real estate.

Excellent, some really good ideas in here that will keep me busy (I need a task list to keep track of what systems I've looked at).

Google systems are out because of the need to store everything externally, and a white board would be personally ideal, but there all being used for the forseeable future :(

I'll have a look at the other solutions that were mentioned, it def. looks like there is something there for me to use :)

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Sorry for resurrecting this post, but I felt it might be good to mention that Todo 3.0 also stores it's data in an XML file.

Strange as it is, even having created such a program, I still find myself using a combination of Todo 3.0, a notepad (which I carry everywhere), a whiteboard, and a notepad on my desk. The whiteboard is great for diagramming stuff (or having things visible after I turn the computer off. The notepad is handy because I take it everywhere with me, so I always have something to take notes down on. The notepad on my desk is mostly there so I have something to jot notes down while on the phone, and Todo 3.0 is there to track general tasks that I need to do (as well as remind me when things are due).

Something to consider I suppose. (Oh, that, and PM me if you want the latest beta of Todo. It's got quite a few nice fixes since the last beta I released).

I quite like http://www.gtdgmail.com/ - it follows the GTD (Getting things done) philisophy, which I'm giving a go.
