Apparently it's not yet abandonware. However, ClassicGaming.com hosts the Genesis ROM. The site is part of the GameSpy network and have had ROMs up for reviewed games for almost a decade now.

I wrote a review for Out of this World here.

There's a link to a review of Flashback as well, which is a similar game made by the same developers. There is a modern re-implementation of Flashback that was developed a few years ago using SDL but you have to have the PC game data for it to work.

Well, I just bought the game a few months ago for about 5 US dollars, legally, and it looks wonderful. I'm sure you can search GDev for the thread with the link.

I recently replayed this excellent game, and it's amazing how unforgiving and difficult games were back then. What's more amazing is that I had no problems playing it when I was young, but now I'm always struggling with the split-second timing and controls. Guess modern games spoilt us [smile]

Great game. I always enjoyed my time with it. It was incredibly challenging and indeed unforgiving but a nice game nonetheless.

I should note that I did this online, at the site linked by NisseBosseLasse, and that I started typing my first post before there were any replies [smile].

It's not abandonware -- the original author still holds onto the rights and I believe he authorized a GBA port last year.

I don't know if he has the rights to particular builds of the game (which would explain why ClassicGaming has it; they're very anal about copyright).

The high-rez PC port looks outstanding.

Nah, if ClassicGaming were anal about copyrights, they wouldn't be hosting any of those ROMs. Back when they were still doing the "ROM of the Week" thing, mostly when Fragmaster ran the site, you could submit a review and pretty much any ROM and it would be posted. They used to host a site called 'The Dump' which had hundreds of Genesis ROMs and other games but it was shut down by IDSA, the video game industry's equivalent of the RIAA. For some reason, the ROM of the Week never got in trouble. They stopped doing it years ago for some reason but they've left all the old articles and downloads up.

Oh, it is... It looks great, without losing any of the cool style.
