Project name: NarutoXCentral Battle Brief description: Basically it's a 2D version of Super Smash Bros using certain fan characters. Target aim: To make a good, smooth, fun game that works like Super Smash Bros on the PC. Compensation: Not really sure. I don't have much. It's just a fangame so I can't really sell it. Technology: PC Talent needed: Programmer Music Designer/Collector Team structure: I basically am the producer of the team. I have all the graphics you need, I gave you the design above, all I need is a programmer who can put something nice together using any language you want. Contacts: TruePsion@yahoo.com (YIM Messenger, MSN Messenger, or email) Additional Info: I have all the sprite sheets, many backgrounds, and things like that. Music isn't really necessary. I'm just looking for a programmer who can make a 2D Super Smash Bros game with the graphics I supply. Feedback: Any and all is welcome feedback, including flames and pessimisms. Here is a sample. I basically took a Naruto Character Sprite Sheet & recolored him a bit. This is basically what you'd be working with. http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/6415/oldernarutonb3.png I'd say the B attacks would be like regular attacks. Y attacks would be Smash Attacks. And then the koma attacks would be specials. Anyone who can make a Super Smash Bros clone, please contact me.

Do you have permission from the owners of the Naruto franchise to make this game?

Edit: If not, I suggest you read this thread.

Looking great!

Well, I would love to help you (I'm a big Naruto fan myself :) )...
But "unfortunatly", I'm programming Games in 3D, so I dont have much experience in 2D-Programming (for now!).
Anyway, if you need a second programmer or something like that - I'm your man! ;)

So what you're saying is...I can't make a Super Smash Bros-esque game using recolord Naruto characters a.k.a. Fan Characters?

That's exactly what he is saying.

Now you can make a game about ninjas with similarities to Naruto but NOTHING of Naruto (sounds, actual moves, designs, sprites, voices, names) can in your game.

Hm, in most cases this is indeed forbidden...
But, there are so many Naruto Fan Games out "there", and I never heared s.t. about "needing a permission". I will check other Naruto-Fan-Game-Forums to see what I can find about this.

Sure, Naruto's owner may not be actively prosecuting or Cease and Desist-ing the fan games, but that doesn't mean that they won't. Do you really want to risk this? It's not that big of a risk, since if they do happen to take action against you, it's almost certainly going to be a Cease and Desist order and if you just change the characters, names, etc. in your program you'll be fine. Or they might not do anything.

However, you should definately take the safe route and contact them before doing anything.

Did you make those sprites? Or did you just take them from an existing game?

I found the sprites ripped and recolored them. If companies want to "cease and desist" people they should start with all the people ripping sprites from their games.

Anyways, if at all, it can maybe be a private/personal game. Not like everyone on the net knows about it. It's just a little game I'd like to make for a forum community for fun.

Giving reasoning like that is just silly. If people want to rip things from games, they will find a way to do it, no matter what the developers/publishers do.

What they can do something about is someone who is distributing or using their idea without express written permission. That's you.

Trust me, this won't be just a private game. If you put in so much time and effort to make it work, you won't be able to just restrict it to a single forum. And if it is good enough, it will spread no matter what you do.

Before you start the game, design different characters and environments. If you use a character or environment that is copyrighted you'll either get a Cease and Desist, and you'll lose a whole lot of time and effort, or they will sue you when you don't C&D.

Neither are particularly desirable outcomes.

Has anyone made a fangame and NOT having credit list, and when finished they send it out on torrent or so just to avoid having it tracable?

It is just a question, not an atempt to currage to breaking the law or something

Just my 2cents...

There are some pretty incredible artist out here who can create content for whatever project you need at a decent price (i.e. www.ifreelance.com). I just find it sort of ignorant that someone would risk "time" on activities which are blatantly and evidently illegal.

There is no grey area when it comes to using some else's IP and copyrights...period. Unless you have proper permission why is this even debatable? What grade are you in? Who is teaching you?

I find it humorous when "children" get out here on the internet and act is if they are shielded from the world and the laws that govern what we can and cannot do based on perceived anonymity. Just because your in your bed room (in your parents house) on a computer doesn't mean the proper authorities wont come and pay you a visit. Don't think for a minute that your too small to be approached and no one will even notice little ole me.

It's misguided and idealistic behavior like this that give good Indies and our community a bad reputation. As we would all one day hope to produce commercially, would you want someone ripping your sh!t? Especially after the hard work from development to marketing that goes into it just so someone like "you" can use it for free?

I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just being realistic. Pony up some cash for god sake. Instead asking for a friggin XBox 360, or whatever the hell you beg your parents for. Use that cash to find an artist or artists that can develop some content in the spirit of the game you want to make. This way, its "yours" and you don't waste your time, someone else time and effort...

If I came off a tad rough, I'm sorry "you" took it that way. It's just fustrating when answers can be achived by applying common sense sometimes.

I understand your want to make your fan game but there is NO loophole that would allow you to use the Naruto IP. I think it's amusing because a lot of comments you've made are comments covered by the sloperama:

LESSON #39: LEGAL STUFF
Q5½: So I can make a Mario game as long as it doesn't have Mario in it or have "Mario" in the title?
A5½: No. You also can't use the Mario music or sound effects, and you can't use any of the other Mario characters (you know, the ones who aren't Mario himself), and you shouldn't simply copy the Mario gameplay exactly.

Q12: But a kajillion other people have done ripoffs of that IP. So I'll just be one in a crowd. I can point to all those others as precedent.
A12: That's the same argument people use for speeding. When the cop stops you, and you point at all those other speeders speeding away, he'll just tell you, "Ah, but there's a difference between them and you. You're the one who I pulled over, so you're the one who's getting the ticket!"

Q7: Of course, now that it's done, I want to put it on my website and share it publicly with others.
A7: No! Problem!

Now all this stuff aside I wish you the best of luck because a ninja oriented SSB-style game would be awesome to play and I do hope you find all the help you need ;-)

edit: I also want to tip my hat to you because IMO most people who come here wanting to make a game off someone else's IP usually try to argue about how they should be allowed while you are very open to what the community has to tell you. I like you.

Heh haven't checked here. Well I am doing what I can to try to make this work without having a problem. So far, I'm being helped in making a game for fun to see what could be. After it's complete...what happens is up to the gaming gods lol

lol another kid..
I am against posts of the type "team members needed",where the current team has no programmers in it. Because that means they dont know how to make a game at all and asking for someone to make the whole stuff for them.
At least learn how to make a "sky with a falling blocks" type of a game, then ask for a larger project.

Such sad judgement you people make. See where you get with that in life.
