I've been doing some research around the topic of getting a lip ring. First of all I'm paranoid about sterilization and finding a properly run shop (with all of the health considerations put into effect). Nextly.. the other big concern is the consequences of getting a ring. I have heard and read that such piercings can rub on teeth and gums to damage them in the long run. But I've also been informed that a properly set piercing can be made to never.. or rarely come in contact with the actual mouth. Do any of you have further information that you'd care to share?

As long as the ring isn't placed so that the stud is near the teeth or the gums where the teeth erupt, it shouldn't cause any problems. However, a lip piercing is considered a medical procedure so the place where you have it done should have all the proper equipment (like an autoclave, gloves, proper lighting, a license, etc).

Complications? Nerve damage. Allergy to certain metals. Speech impediment. Infection. Dental damage from the procedure itself. Bleeding, swelling, etc.

(I work in the medical field, fyi).

Not to mention that getting any decent job, or getting a large proprtion of the world to take you seriously, will be difficult. I don't say if that's good or bad, but it sure is true!

Being one for being free to express yourself (and having had both ears done and still having both nipples done) I find lip rings exceedingly dumb and ugly. You probably will find it harder to get a job with something like that. This is the very reason I don't get any tattoos on my lower arms. But if you find an employeer thats worth working for he'll look past things like that.

All tattoo places (and hence piercing) should have to have regular health inspections by the state. All should have an autoclave or even better, use needles once and throw away. I've never been in a dirty place which relates to the health inspections.

If you aren't sure then just go in one and ask them those questions. Tattooists/piercers are generally laid back and some of the nicest people you will meet. Should be happy to show you how their operation works.

You come into this world with X number of holes.

Leaving with X+1 doesn't net you anything extra, other than more holes.

Ask yourself, "Does this really do anything for me?" For what reasons do you want this? The money is better spent on other things for similar expression that don't involve punching holes in your flesh.

hey, don't worry about and speech problems or damage to teeth. I have had my lip ring for about a month now and i was able to talk normally a day after the piercing. If you think you will look good with the piercing then i say good ahead and go it!
