I've written a (fairly lengthy) journal entry about how I see tags manifesting themselves in the next version of the site software: This is relevant to your interests I'd appreciate any feedback from the community on how it sounds, given that you're the guys who'd be using it. I think I understand people's requirements fairly well, but I'm particularly interested if you think you have a use case that I've not accounted for. [EDIT: Moved to the Lounge to solicit more feedback. Even if you don't feel like reading my journal entry, do you use any tagging systems already? What do you think of them? Are there particular ideas you've seen around the place that you think would work well at GDNet, or that you think should be avoided?]

Will these tags be able to put threads automagically in the correct forum?
Also will there be a "tag" search and a normal search as well?
I honestly I would like to be able to tag a post as opposed to a whole thread.
Will tagging replace bookmarking?

Effectively, yes. (Forums won't actually exist anymore - we'd have saved searches instead - but as tags for a thread are applied it will show up in the correct searches).

Not sure about that. I'm considering a unified search approach which uses both tags and fulltext (using the tags to help decide the relevance), but also allowing search queries that use google-style terms like "tag:programming".

Noted. Any chance you could point me to some examples? If you're just considering that you might want to mark out one particular post in a thread as having good information, we're considering another way of doing that (per-post rating kinda things).

No, it would augment it. You'd bookmark a thread, and your bookmark could contain some tags.

Who gets to tag content, and at what granularity should content be tagged?

Too many authors can't even write a proper post, nevermind tag it well. Del.icio.us's community model is what we need IMO.

Per-thread is useful for navigation and classification (e.g. C++, Singletons, Newbie, Error, GoogleIt)
Per-post is useful for clarification (e.g. Misinformation, VeryHelpful, Spam) and filtering, annoying to use for navigation IMO.
Per-poster tagging could be interesting. Like the current rating system, only tagified instead of a singular metric.

User-set tag weighting* seems like overkill. Simply infer it from total counts IMO. The tag system's strength is elegance through simplicity.

Auto tag suggestions? Yes. Not just for archived content, not just for the lazy, but for the fools out there as well.

Avoiding tag abuse? Maybe a non-issue. The normal model is: tag (+1 tag category count), don't tag (+0 to the tag category count), display the top N tags. We could add "antitags" (-1 tag category count) which nullify one pro-tag count. *This is a binary weighting mechanism, I guess.

Aside: I don't use the current GD bookmarking system. I prefer centralization to integration for the most part. I have regular haunts instead, so all my threads of interest pop back to the top eventually anyways if/when they get replies. Not that it isn't necessarily useful to some, just consider me Persona non grata for that. I would use whatever categorization filtering tools provided, though, just as I use the forum categories now. Separating things into categories rather than picking them specifically out as being above a certain threshold of being relevant to my interests.

Only fairly recently have I moved to starting using del.icio.us. It is because I cannot keep my browser bookmarks straight as I cannot decide proper weighting (and thus hierarchy) or find it too clunky (hierarchy navigation to select where to put it, compared to just entering in a couple of relevant keywords). I type all my keywords both for searching and saving, typically (for uniformity in my viewing system of that).

Easy access to the same bookmarks from multiple systems doesn't hurt it's case either.

I had a wonderment and question. Some of us, myself included, put [subject here] in front of our post (or [solved] / [fixed] at the end). Can we use that as a sort of prototype tagging system for now?

No, because it restricts ability to "tag" to the OP only (unless moderators edit). It lacks the emergent behaviors that true tag systems exhibit as a function of multiple users applying diverse tags.
