I was wondering what the best reference would be for a beginner to DirectX? Concentrating mainly on DirectDraw. One more question. Does DirectDraw have function to Draw Lines/Rects/Ellipses onto it's surfaces, or do you have to use GDI? And if you have to use GDI is there any advantage to use DirectDraw if I am mainly using these (Lines/Rects/Ellipses) functions? Mig Edited by - Multiple Migs on April 10, 2001 4:18:58 PM

From the very little that I have done with DirectX, I can tell you that there isn''t any built in functions for drawing circles or elipses(or even lines that I know of). You would have to do all this yourself pixel by pixel.

However, the difference between using Direct Draw over the GDI is very clear. Speed. Using the GDI is VERY VERY SLOW. Direct Draw basically gives you Direct access to the hardware, whereas the GDI goes through windows. If your application uses circles and elipses a lot, and you don''t care too much about speed, I would stick with the GDI. If, however, you are trying to make an actually game, I would go the DX route and just make your own functions for drawing circles, elipses and lines.

Hope that helps!
