I started to learn assembly, and i''m off to a bad start, i''m reading Art Of Assembly and i downloaded the samples and the assemply stdlib library that is there. when i compile anything with MASM, if the code can be assembled, it gets assempled, but the linker screwes up, here''s the error i get: Assembling: D:\stdlib\EXAMPLES\Shell.asm Microsoft (R) Incremental Linker Version 5.12.8078 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1992-1998. All rights reserved. /z2 "Shell.obj" "Shell.exe" NUL LINK : warning LNK4044: unrecognized option "z2"; ignored LINK : error : Segment reference in fixup record Shell.obj : fatal error LNK1123: failure during conversion to COFF: file invalid or corrupt Volume in drive D has no label Volume Serial Number is 1AEE-374E Directory of D:\stdlib\EXAMPLES SHELL ASM 2,408 12-01-92 4:37p SHELL.ASM 1 file(s) 2,408 bytes 0 dir(s) 24,553.25 MB free what''s up with that? i does that for examples that came with art of assembly and examples that came with STDLIB. thanks

not sure exactly which version of masm you''re using, but when i use my version, it gives some sort of message like that whenever i don''t specify an exe name. i usually go masm /c file.asm to compile it into object code, then i type link file.obj.

i have two executables to do that, masm and link.

yours might be both. try masm /l program.exe file.asm

This works for me with MASM ml 6.14, link 5.12:

For Win32:

ml /c /coff fname.asm
link /subsystem:windows fname.obj

For VxD:

ml /c /coff /DMASM6 /DWIN40COMPAT=1 /DBLD_COFF fname.asm
link /vxd /def:fname.def fname.obj

For DOS, I used to use Borland TASM/TLINK but that was real long ago.
