I've done a lot game programming in python, but recently I've tried to do some in C++. I'm using Ubuntu 7.04, and anjunta as an IDE. Now I'm trying to setup SDL. I was following Lazy Foo's tutorial, but when i try to install the development libraries .rpm i get this error: error: Failed dependencies: /bin/sh is needed by SDL-devel-1.2.11-1.i386 SDL = 1.2.11 is needed by SDL-devel-1.2.11-1.i386 So i got the SDL 1.2.11 rpm, but when i try to install that i get: error: Failed dependencies: libc.so.6 is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1.3) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libdl.so.2 is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libm.so.6 is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libpthread.so.0 is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.3.2) is needed by SDL-1.2.11-1.i386 Now I'm stuck. If anybody can help me, or suggest a different Game Library that works on Linux i would appreciate it.

I would uninstall the RPM, and use apt-get in the command line. Try "apt-get update", followed by "apt-cache search sdl | grep libsdl", finally "apt-get install libsdl-*version*-dev" (where version is the highest number you find in the apt-cache search, I found 1.2). You will need to be root for these, "sudo -i" will give you a root prompt.

If you're using Fedora, do (in a terminal/console):

yum -y install SDL-devel

That should do it, it would also install all dependencies.

or if you're feeling old school:

up2date -i SDL-devel

PS: Oh yeah, you need to be root for that so login as root, sudo the commands or run su.

You really shouldn't use RPM's with Ubuntu; it can't automatically deal with dependencies for you (as you noticed).

Instead, you could do it the way rip-off suggests. I'd recommend doing it through synaptic, though. Click "System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager". First, click Update, and let it do its thing. Then, search for sdl (with the built-in search tool). Click the checkmarks next to the packages you want to install, and click apply to download and install them. (There's tons of software available this way.)

If you're using Fedora [...]

I'm guessing the bit that said "I'm using Ubuntu 7.04" means he isn't using Fedora. :P

But yeah, to the original poster, don't use RPMs except as a last resort. You should go through the normal Ubuntu packaging system for the most part. I expect rip-off's advice will work fine, though you may want to set up your 'Software Sources' or whatever they're called to include more packages; then you will probably find SDL development libraries in the usual application for adding and removing software.

Heh, I totally missed that [smile], since he said he's using RPMs, I just assumed he was using an RPM based distribution (Fedora, CentOS, Mandrake).

Anyway, yeah, [insert here what's already been said about using the distribution packaging system].

How to install SDL in Ubuntu:

use system->administration->Synaptic package manager. click search, and enter "libsdl" as your search term (without the quotes). look for the package named "libsdl1.2-dev" (if you can't find it, click settings->repositories, and make sure that the main, restricted, universe, and multiverse repositories are all checked). Click the box next to it, and select "mark for installation". At this point Synaptic may ask you for permission to install several other things that sdl needs. click mark if it does. Next click apply, and wait for it to download and install.
Placeholder for better sig.

Thanks guys, rip-off's idea worked.
