Whats the best book to start out with computer graphics? A lot of colleges seem to choose C.G. principles and practice (foley,et al), but it seems to be more of a reference book from some stuff i have read (and its pretty old). also, real time rendering (moller, haines) is used but seems to be sort of a second book rather than a first. i saw a recently written book called C.G. using opengl (hill, hill) and it has good reviews but i havent seen any colleges that use it or websites (like here) that recommend it. any ideas? i know how to program c/c++ and am good with math, but dont know where to start with computer graphics. suggestions? thanks.

Hey. To get started on Computer Graphics (starting with 2d is usually a *GREAT* idea) get Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus. Its an easy read, and is packed full of information.

Once you get that down, and practice with 2d a little bit, I would really recommend picking up Real Time Rendering. I love that book, its amazing how much information I learned from each page. *GREAT BOOK*. I also have 3D Graphics Programming: Games and Beyond, by Sergei Savchenko. Its not as good as RTR, but I am having some fun reading that too. Hope thats helps ya.

If you are good at maths, the BEST book has to be "3D Game Engine Design" by Elbery, it goes into more of design details than graphics, but is a hugely informative book. I highly recommend it.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

3D game engine design is very good. Actually, you might just want to buy/download the OpenGL red book. It is more focussed on OpenGL than algorithms (obvious) but it should get you started. go to www.google.com and searcg for "Red Book PDF", you''ll soon find a PDF version of it. Since you are already good at math, you can surely use this book to start gfx coding. Then, you should go to www.nvidia.com/developer. They have the *best* collection of demos and whitepapers about advanced graphics algorithms and methods. And, try www.realtimerendering.com. It''s a big link collection. With those three ressources, you''ll probably never need anything else.
