I'm going to university soon and have been reading up on some job applications for games programming jobs. They all ask for sample code. I obviously plan to solve this by writing code in my spare time at uni but I am clueless as to the sort of things employers will be looking for in my code to tell whether I am a good programmer or not. Could you please explain the different areas of programming I should show my knowledge in and how best to present them - in one large game or smaller pieces of various games. etc. please give examples to better explain yourself as I only know some basics of programming at the moment.

You're probably better off just waiting till you learn how to program and subsequently decide that you actually want to make a career out of it.

Generally, if you're passionate about being a game programmer you'll be inclined to start up hundreds of hobby projects throughout uni as you learn more and more. "oh cool, with this thing i just learned I bet I could make this cool game thing/feature/whatever". At the end of uni, you'll then have hundreds of projects from which to select.

They want to see your best work which means you're not going to write any of what you'll show them until the end of uni anyway. i.e. your best will be that which is written when you know the most which happens at the end of university.

100% of what you write in your first years at university will embarrass you at the end of university. Trust me, you won't want anyone in the world to take a look at your first several projects. You'll think they are badass when you first write them but realize much later what a nub you were. =)

Don't stress so much; college is about learning and having fun. The jobs will come.
