You could start with tic-tac-toe, then move on to tetris or something similar. But a good place to start might well be Kevin's Space Invaders 101 tutorial. Follow that first, then, if you want to move on to 3D, follow his asteroids tutorial.

Here's a tutorial on graphics in java: linky
If you've just learned Java, it may be a little over your head, but its good once you're ready for it.
Still 2^10 :P

I have to disagree. Well, to an extent it is better to join someone else's project if it's a simple game such as pacman were you can atlest learn the basics. But don't go joining a project to make a RPG or something along those lines because you will find out you are biting off more then you can chew.

What type of stuff do you want to know about Swing?

Do you know any AWT stuff?

How much Java GUI development have you done?
(i.e. windows, listeners, layouts, panels, components)

The graphics object in both awt and swing are the same so there is little difference to the game programmer. SUN tutorials are long winded and don't go too indepth but they cover everything and also show a lot of neat things that you can do with the Graphics object.

SUN 2D Tutorial

I can't say there would be a single tutorial I would recommend. You really just have to do a google search and look at as many as possible in order to find what you are looking to do. Also, taking a look at some of the code that people have posted in this Forum is a good place to start.

Try some of my Snippets that I posted on my Blog their pretty lightweight and they go over some of the basics of working with Graphics. If you don't find what you are looking for after all that please let me know of any specific thing that you are looking to do and I will write a snippet for you.
