Whats this I hear about OpenGL 1.3? I looked about opengl.org and various other places and don''t see what some people are talking about... Can someone point me to an article or release of the new OpenGL specifications? Thanks, -Tom

It''s impossible for Microsoft to kill OpenGL. Yes, perhaps they can hinder it on their own platforms, but there are enough OpenGL developers out there to keep it as at least an afterthough in Microsoft applications. Plus, removing it would break many existing applications. Regardless, if OpenGL died on Microsoft platforms, there are still tons more on which OpenGL thrives.

So, unless you know something I don''t...

I am still pondering between OpenGL and DirectX, I know about both and I think OpenGL is going to be around for awhile since it exists on both Windows and Linux, its a nicely portable api with support from big video card companies. I keep hearing people mention OpenGL 1.3 though and I would like to know more, so can someone fill me in please? I personally would like to see OpenGL upgrade more and compete with DirectX.

You should probably say "compete more" instead of compete. DirectX has just now reached a level of pseudo-equivelancy on one (not that MS wants more than one) platform in the field of graphics. The only thing MS could do to convince me to use DirectX would be to have hardware extensions, make it multiplatform, and make it open source. It isn''t going to happen in the forseeable future, so I don''t see why I''d use it for graphics .

I started with DirectX when I got into 3d programming. I then looked at OpenGl and how easy it was to get anything on the screen. After reading many threads here on MS XP...I went out and bought Linux (can''t wait to install it).

I''ve herd rumors of a thing called Fahrenheit. I guess it was to take over OpenGL and DirectX?

Anyway...if OpenGL will go cross platform...I''m all for that. Plus it has the backing of many video cards. 8)

Linux is a learning experience, I can tell you that (I never knew the horizontal refresh rate of my monitor until I installed it). Farenheit is largely considered to be dead, just forget about it (whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion). And, OpenGL is crossplatform, no if about it (yeah, it's probably just me reading your phrasing wrong).
