Well, I registered today, I was pretty sure not to have signed the tick, but I got 2 message on my email: one from the webmaster (I clicked the link), and one from GDNet Direct asking me to reply to that message. Ok, what the hell is GDNet Direct ? I didin't want anything but the forum registration. Can you explain me ?
'GDNet Direct' is the GameDev.net newsletter - which was quite outdated last time I subscribed to it, but maybe the news team have it up to date by now (that was ~4 months ago). Not sure why it would have signed you up automatically, but not a biggie, if you don't want to receive it, there is an 'unsubscribe' link at the bottom of every issue.
So I have to reply to that message (as they ask) and the unsubscribe ?

You don't receive it? I received one this morning, and well, it's up to date with the site content of yesterday.
Gaiiden (content lead) takes care of this, so if you have any problem, just ping it [smile]
It seems to be a good thing indeed, ok, I'll subscribe :)
the newsletter is still alive? I stopped receiving it a while back - just assumed it had died a lonely death [oh]
best check if my spam filter is killing it, but I don't think it is simply because its useless against even the most blatant spam [lol]

No, I unsubscribed, since I subscribe to the front page RSS feed anyway, and check the forums most days, it wasn't doing a whole lot extra for me (plus the formatting was broken under gmail at the time).

Yea, it's like Gamasutra's newsletter, something for people who don't visit the website often. Sounds like you didn't need it for sure. It used to have some original content as well, but that didn't pick up momentum as well as I had hoped it would so it was dropped. Now we're back to text-only issue because of all the formatting problems the HTML version was starting to have. I hope to launch a new HTML version soon.
As for the OP's problem - what you received was probably an opt-in letter. If you do not respond, you won't be signed up and you won't get any issues. So if you don't want the newsletter, just ignore it.
