Hello, I need to port my engine to DirectX 7 (it already works with DX 8 or 9 or OGL 1.1). I'd be very happy to find sample code and/or the SDK's .chm file of DX7 as there seems to be quite a difference with later versions. MSDN's archives are really badly done and slow to browse, does somebody know a link to nicer documentation or at least sample code? Thanks for helping! Methe

Ok, I'm going to bite. Why? Isn't DirectX 7 for Windows 95? If your engine already works with DX8 and DX9, why port to DX7? You loose all shaders, and a crapload of other stuff. If the reason for DX7 is to support Windows 95, please don't bother, Windows 95 is 13 years old after all - hell, there's a version of DOS which is more recent [smile]

Forgetting that, porting from D3D8 to D3D7 is a lot more difficult than porting from D3D9 to D3D8 (or vice versa), since the interface was changed a fair bit in D3D8 (No DirectDraw at all, for instance).

I have a version of the DirectX 7 SDK (I like to hoard my SDKs [smile]) on my other PC, but it'll take hours to upload to somewhere. There's at least one site somewhere which has older SDK versions available for download, but I don't recall where it was (I know it's Google indexed, and it wasn't Microsoft.com) for if you decide you really want to port to DX7.

Nonono! Please don't bite.
I agree with you! but... my boss wants it. :/
So there I am.

I've of course used google a lot and found 2-3 websites that claimed to give you external links to DX7 SDKs but actually they did not. Maybe there are others I couldn't find though.

Now if you have a SDK of DX7 that would be greatly appreciated cause trying to figure out what I should pass in the third void pointer parameter of function DX7::BLAHBLAH() has some limits (and is getting on my nerves)... :p

thx.

I'll upload an SDK tomorrow if nobody's posted a link by then) It'll be about 24 hours from now depending on my upload speed). As far as I know it's completely legal for me to redistribute the SDK in it's original form (A 130MB or something self extracting exe) - someone feel free to let me know if I'm wrong [smile]

Just going by the file sizes, that doesn't look accurate. The redistributables might be around that size, but the SDKs are much larger (over 100MB each last time I checked)

Wow the nightmare of support will far outweigh the 5 sales you get of your product. Seriously, I think Windows 95 is like 1% of the OS population now.

ah yes, Evil Steve your right, I didn't look at the file sizes.

This should be it, www.electromanuk.com/directx/dx7sdk.zip which is 122MB so it looks about right.

What a pleasure to work with you guys ^^.
And I agree on the sales.
But orders are orders, right. :)

Not really. Not when it will cost more then you make. The purpose is to make money I believe not lose it. Sounds like you have the typical clueless boss. He just sees dollar signs not real life. You're going to spend hundreds of hours programming for 95/98 support and what kind of research have you done to find out about ROI? Then you have to factor in debugging costs, support costs. I suspect you'd need a few hundred copies sold to 95/98 owners to break even. If the people are that far behind, where they cannot view a lot of websites... I doubt they'll be buying games ;-)

Have fun!

IIRC Windows 95 support went up to DX 8.0a. So this is not an excuse for DX7.

Edit: Verified this. The developer runtime with support for Windows 95 is available here.
