Sever Colocation Questions

I'll be honest and say this isn't entirely game-related or programming-related, but folks here are helpful and knowledgeable and this forum FAQ covers a similar question. I'm helping out the administrators at a large Total War fansite who are looking to remedy server issues they are having. We currently have Dedicated Sever Hosting, but we are looking to buy our own hardware, as it should be cheaper in the long run (particularly for issues such as upgrades). I've been looking into colocation costs, and they are quite high... oftentimes higher, in fact, than the $300 we are paying for hosting and hardware with our Dedicated plan, and the numbers don't tell a huge difference between bandwidth/speed etc. Why is there such a big discrepancy (one would assume colocation would be cheaper than managed hosting?), and why is colocation so expensive when compared to similar dedicated server hosting (at least when we're dealing with a couple units of rackspace and not a couple cabinets)? I appreciate any help you guys can give in figuring this out.

Co-location is expensive for the first rack. There's a whole issue of physical security with co-lo which you don't have with dedicated hosting. If you rent only a few units of rack space, the co-lo overhead is high. If you want to rent, say, a whole rack (30-40 units), you're likely to get a much better deal when getting quotes from providers.

Also, when it comes to co-lo, make sure you actually talk to a sales person, and get a quote, as published rates may not be the same as actual rates. Although you'll have a hard time getting any sales guy interested in a single box co-lo set-up, for the reasons above.
