bullets exploding

What would be the result if a cartrdige exploded without being in the chamber of a gun? For example, a .223 round. How much force would the explosion have, or would the shell contain most of the gas? Would the bullet still break free? Just wondered.
The bullet would shoot out, but with nowhere near the force it would have if it was in a barrel. The casing would shoot backwards, probably faster than the bullet shoots forward (Im assuming the casing weighs less than the lead bullet). The casing might also break apart and send shrapnel in lateral directions. The whole thing would be non-lethal, however you wouldnt want to be standing too close, and you could lose an eye or a testicle.
Just guessing.
Just guessing.
I'm thinking of sticking this in a game, so It would be know to know for sure.
Actually. A round being fired not in a barrel would generally cause the actual casing to explode. The bullet wouldn't shoot forward and the casing back. The barrel of a firearm keeps the casing intact.
However, it DOES depend on the caliber/type. I would bet you could find a round that shot the bullet forward a bit.
I've seen rounds go off not in a barrel. Honestly, it's not very impressive. Without a barrel to concentrate the gases it's more of an m80 or something like that. Some just sort of fizzle and don't even explode. It's not all that dangerous to try if you want. Just don't do it with a shotgun shell or a .50 cal+ cartridge with a shit-ton of powder or something.

o_O
I cant say I recommend trying that.
However, if you do try it, make sure to film it and then put it on youtube :)
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT take advise on explosives from someone with a Gamedev rating of 0,...
But yeah, a single thing of normal ammo going off generally isn't that dangerous unless you are holding it in your hand, or sitting on it. Most casings aren't strong enough to contain the pressure so they just rip apart and most of the force just bleeds off into the air. The scraps that do going flying generally don't have the power to go that far or do much damage.
However, it still isn't something to screw around with in real life. Secondary fires and explosions are possible, and there is still the chance that something goes 'wrong' and causes serious injury or even death.
Contact an expert, if you feel you can come across as completely serious, try asking at a firing range (or if you can't find anything else, a police department) for a firearms expert you could ask questions about weapons safety or something, then explain to them you are looking to model an effect in a video game/digitally animated movie. If you are lucky, you might be able to convince someone that knows what they're doing to set some off in a safe and controlled manner and film the effects remotely.

I'm not saying that you should go out with a box of ammunition and start setting them off. I'm saying it's not going to be some super-deadly explosion and shrapnel flying everywhere.
Also: What does a rating have to do with firearms knowledge? I mean... wtf. I have this rating because of my political viewpoints.
A police department is not a good place to ask. Most police have barely an hour's worth of training with firearms. I wouldn't trust one to hit a human sized target at 1 meter. Also, they might get a little suspicious if you come in asking about guns. Most police look down on 'mere civilians' and they might give you some shit.

Well I DON'T want to try it. Thats why I'm asking here. In the UK you cant go to a shooting range because there aren't any. Testing this at home is not possible. If I was working on a commercial game I would travel abroad and experiment with a few things. I have friends in Pakistan who have various weapons, and I could visit them. But thats an expensive ticket. I only write this game for learning purposes.
So, If I put in my game some boxes of ammo which explode if a grenade goes off near them, should that do damage to nearby enemies or should it just be wasted?

I would have it do damage, from a pure gameplay aspect, and I think an entire box would do a lot more than just one round.

I would assume there would be a lot of shrapnel deployed by a case of bullets hit by a grenade blast. While likely less dangerous then the shrapnel of the grenade itself it would likely still cause injury.
I agree. If the round isn't fired from the primer, it probably will just sizzle and cook off. Again, something to contain the gases makes all the difference...
Also: Mythbusters is a load of crap. They don't do experiments with any kind of accuracy whatsoever. They just hack something together and 'prove' or 'disprove' myths with one test or so....
Rifle vs. Mags
Quote:so if mythbusters did set something up where a bullet propelled from a casing caused injury how would you suggest a sloppy engineer would set up such a situation to the extent it voided the test?

no barrel + harm = proved. I would like to see you make a more entertaining myth show.
