I need a piece of advice with this...
Hi everyone,
I will start shortly to develop a game I have in mind. It will be like oldchool 2D platformer but everything in 3D. The game will look something like this:

My question is about how to create rooms for the game. The game doesn´t have scroll, you enter a room and go out to the next one.
By the way I would like to have something like a cave in the background that will look pretty nice with correct lighting.
I have tried to build the rooms (foreground graphics that are not platforms), with heightmaps but it is pretty difficult to do. Then I thought about 3D tiles, but it seems that it will be pretty hard to make things look smooth because tiles have relief (I don´t know if it will be done with normal or with geometry).
So, Could anyone help with this? I could be wrong and some of the previous method could work but I can´t see the correct way to do it.
