I believe there is a big problem with the game development scene today.People do not support each other.See, you''ve got this newbie who wants to make a game and posts his idea on a message board.Next thing he knows he''s being flamed by twenty people, being called an idiot and told to shut up.Do you know how that feels ? Now why flame him ? He''s unexperienced, OK.So possibly he won''t make the game. But what if you tell him "hey, I like your idea".You know what will happen ? He''ll be glad. He''ll be motivated. He''ll work on it, and maybe even manage to complete it.One of the most important reasons game projects fail is that the motivation, the joy of working, dies away. You get bored. But if you''re supported by others - simply by words - you don''t get bored. You get enthusiastic. When I hear good words about a game I made, I am filled with the urge to work. Why cannot the members of the gamedev community support each other ? It''s so simple.Send someone a nice email if you played his game.Let him know that someone out there actually downloaded it.Use madmonkey.net to review his game.Post something on a messageboard, perhaps even at GDnet.Don''t flame newbies, however stupid they may be.Be kind. It''s not too much work, really. And what''s the deal with people from one site hating people from another ? The GameDev community should be united. So, I''m calling for a movement, a campaign to change the way we behave.Let''s start supporting each other and show what the independent game scene is really worth.

I think the reason why people look down upon newb''s is because they see the past or something. Someone should do a study on this.

NEWBIE SUPPORTER! Shut up. (j/k)

Seriously though, as much as I try to help some newbies, I even occasionally lose it on them, and bash them for their stupidity. But, everyone was a newbie once, and would you have appreciated it if everyone just flamed you in your time of need and guidance?

Well I''m not just talking about newbies.I mean, even the more advanced (independent) game developers don''t support each other very much. It''s not really that hard to send sb a nice email with your opinion on his/her game, is it ?

Great ideea runemaster ! Being nice and helping others costs so little and can go so far ! In example, playing an indie game is plain fun, but sending feedback to the developer (minor/major bugs, how the game works on your system, etc) is of very real help, besides motivating.

As for newbies, they too can help a lot, cause you dont need to know much to play games and discuss them in forums or find out bugs or writing reviews. And answering simple (though somewhat annonying) newbie questions is little price for having a throng of newbies discussing indie games on forums or beta-testing.

Maybe we should have a "beta-testing" forum here on gamedev, where everyone is supposed to discuss games/demos/small progs in the making.

It''s really time we start helping each other. As you said, it "costs so little and can go so far".

Nice idea. I can''t say I''ve ever flamed a newbie myself I always direct them to tutorials or try and help them myself.

We should help newbies, I was helped a great deal by just reading these forums and reaslising how little I actually knew. I''m a hell of a lot better at programming now than I was pre GDnet for certain.

Maybe a link to a list of FAQs which will include questions newbies often and used to ask will help lessen such animosity towards them as they can check the FAQ for often asked questions?

Perhaps that would help, but it isn''t exactly what I''m talking about. We shouldn''t just support newbies. We should support everyone that''s doing a good job or at least trying to.Just sending an email can mean very much.
