I came upon an idea today that would let me preform fast caustics on tranparent objects using their surface normals relative to the light (and a few other tricks up my sleeve for visual quality). I'm just wondering if this has already been done just so I'm not reinventing the wheel here.

Frankly I dont understand how this would work. Normally you do caustic effects like underwater lighting with a projected texture that is either animated or created by noise. Thas't pretty fast.

oooh nice, well that's good, maybe I created a new tecnique. Not getting ahead of myself of course. This method works similar to what you described except it uses the models per-pixel normal map to bend light rays.
