You can use C++ (and C) to interface to most database. If you're using VS you could use SQL Server Express; it integrates well with the IDE.

You will probably need a SQL server which can be accessed over a network, but you will always have to use SQL Statements, so it does not really matter what SQL server you use in the end. MySQL is GPLed which would require you to release the source of your app if you use their API. AFAIK Postgres is more liberal in this send (I think it has a BDS like license)

Yep, I suggest PostgreSQL too. We use it at work for a project and we never had problems with it. That said, I suppose that as long as you use ODBC interfaces (don't know about c++, never used c++ with databases) it doesn't really matter which database type you use (well, sort of)...

Huh? You're required to release the source if you *distribute* an application which contains their API. That's a whole world of difference right there. If he's making an MMO, chances are he'll only have the database on his server and not on the distributed client.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct, as far as GPLv2 goes. GPLv3 may include additional clauses to handle COM-based and web-service-based workarounds to the GPLv2.
