Project name: Grand Nexus Brief description: 2D exploration game. This is an initial precursor project that would suit anyone wanting to gain experience with games programming. It will be a top-down small virtual world in which 'players' (testers) can walk around and talk to each other. This initial concept application will provide the base for other projects that, depending on quality of work for the prototype, could be paid work. Target aim: Initial project freeware leading to shareware in further projects. Compensation: This is a small prototype project and so would not be paid work. However the same developers would be asked to participate in larger projects which would very likely be paid. Technology: This game will be aimed solely at the .NET framework although which version depends on the skill of the developer who applies. Talent needed: This project requires a C#.NET client developer who is comfortable with 3D graphics and able to code using either the .NET 1 or 2 framework. Team structure: This will be a two-person development team. I am the leader developer/project manager and will supervise the project through to completion. Artists have already expressed interest in this project. Contacts: borgpidgeon@googlemail.com irc.heavenlyplace.net #collective Additional Info: While I am looking for a C#.NET developer I am not totally closed to the idea of another language. As the developer would be working on the client it would be acceptable for any other language to be used as long as the developer was comfortable handling TCP connections in that language. I ask for C# as I am a C# programmer and could work closely with the applicant. Feedback: All [Edited by - BorgPidgeon on March 11, 2008 8:08:29 PM]

Your target aim is shareware, which is a commercial distrobution method. Now I fully understand you probably dont have the funds to pay someone upfront, but if you are planning on a commercial venture of any sort, you need to be at bare minimum paying the people developing the game in royalties. Noone is going to work for free while another person reaps the majority of the benifits.

I just want to say that it's nice to see a reasonable project with a manageable scope. You aren't trying to rip off IP, you aren't trying to create a billion dollar MMO, and you aren't trying to incorporate a thousand different technologies into one. Those three things along put you above 99% of the rest of the posters in Help Wanted.

I hope you find someone to help you out.

PaulCesar: That wasn't what I intended. I have updated my original post.

Mike.Popoloski: Thank you, I hope someone is interested too. I'd really like to get this base done.

I have included a break down of the features I would like to include on this project. Keep in mind this project will not be a complete game as you would normally expect but rather the solid foundation of a game and learning experience.

Game Play

This will be a tile-based game in which each tile represents a 2m X 2m area. Players will navigate the world by clicking where they would like to go then their avatar would walk to that tile and stop, all checks for whether the player can actually exist at the specified location will be done by the server and feedback given by the client. As stated before this will be an initial project ideal for anyone who would like to get a start on real games development.

The map will be automatically divided into relatively large squares which will determine who can see what. There will be one 'skill' type (mining) which the player can level and sell the produce to an NPC trader who will then offer the player different types of hats in exchange for in-game currency.

Having just one skill to level means that for this testing project the development team could concentrate on working out all leveling kinks. Once that is done adding another skill type would easier. Hats will be a way to test clothing/visible armour in the game as once this type of element has been added it should easily be adapted to any other kind of clothing/armour.

The map itself will be no bigger than 20 sectors with each sector containing 400 tiles. The terrain will be dynamic meaning that it can be raised or lowered by players. This will be accomplished by each vertex having it's own height value and modifying it on each mining action (lower) or drop action (raise) then updating the client.

Key Development Interests

Area calculations to determine which players can see each other and if a player is close enough to an object to interact with it.

Skills system allowing for skills to be added and experience to be gained.

Visible Armour/Clothing .

Dynamic terrain.

If you would like to take up this challenge or even if you would just like to learn more about games programming please contact me to discuss. Note that you will need to have experience in your chosen programming language C# is best as we could then work together more closely but it is not vital.
