Hey guys, which websites are currently considered to be reputable domain name registration servies? I dont want to be tricked by some shady service but also I want the whole deal on services available to me. So Id prefer something more pricey if it gives me valuable extra benefits. -CProgrammer
I also use GoDaddy for my 4 or 5 domains. My only tip is make sure you do the private registration or else you'll get bunches of spam and telephone calls. Only $9 for the year and well worth it.
Is the Gamedev domain also registered with GoDaddy?
Nick: Thanks for the tip.
Nick: Thanks for the tip.
But wait, doesnt doing a provate registration mean that the domain is not registered in my name!
It means that WHOIS information that is available to every random Joe is limited.
namecheap.
I have had issues with GoDaddy on two occasions with domains of customers over bullshit complaints. GoDaddy's response to this in 999,999 out of 1,000,000 times is "Fuck You." Getting your domain back from GoDaddy is akin to getting your money back from PayPal when they put a freeze on your account. That is, I hope you didn't need/want your domain/money.
That is not even going into their constant attempts to hammer you with crap you will never need, or their customer service which is painful at best when resolving unexpected and unexplained charges or technical issues. But then, the money for celebrities on their home page and Super Bowl ads has to come from somewhere.
Plenty of people have had no problems with GoDaddy. It's the extremity and frequency of horror stories that I have found telling, my own experiences aside.
When you say "the whole deal on services," which services are you talking about in particular?

GoDaddy are cheap but they are awful when it comes to siding with corporations against individuals. They will always side with the party they think are most likely to be able to afford to sue them. They routinely confiscate domains. However they're damn cheap and I use them for a lot of private domains. If you want a resilient (i.e business critical) registrar I would look into using the same registrar (and hosts) as The Pirate Bay is on. If they have been able to withstand the international pressure to kill that site, they'll most likely be rock solid at standing up for you.
GoDaddy just keeps getting better!
