I was wondering if any of you could post up any websites that are having game development contests similar to the one GameDev.net does. Challenges motivate me to actually work on something and stick with it and a few contests is what I need at the moment to motivate me to work. There doesnt have to be any prizes either. Thanks in advance!

GameInstitute has regular challenges that are free to enter and participate in, no prizes. The latest one is just ending next week and a new one should be starting in August. I always post news on them so keep an eye on the front page.

Then there's Ludum Dare, but I don't know how active it's been recently.

There was also Game In A Day (GID) - but that seems really defunct now. If no one here can speak on its status you can always ask in the GID forums.

Occasionally there's some informal contests held on GameDev.net as well. I'm planning on running another one week one myself in a few months time.

I'm a little late to the party but Tigsource has some pretty neat themed competition every once in a while. So far they've had the B-Game Competition, the Video Game Name Generator Competition, and just recently the Procedural Game Competition. Personally I think the community is hard to penetrate into because they seem to have formed a little clique but it's pretty cool nonetheless.
