Because we all need to flex our e-peens every once in a while. Here's mine. E8500 3.16GHz, OC'd to around 4.2GHz 4GB DDR2 Corsair at 1066MHz, OC'd 500GB Western Digital NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB, will OC it when I learn how without screwing it up. Liquid cooled Vista 64bit And it glows red when I turn it on :)

Or at least, it will be. Turns out that despite using my credit card for everything overseas, NCIX doesn't allow people to use international Visa credit cards. HUH?! Now I gotta run around and get this bank account open so I can pay for the darn thing before the free shipping offer ends, otherwise I'm looking at paying at least $80.

Taterpeel: Just out of interest, do you have memory hole remapping turned on in your bios? Because with a 1GB video card and no memory mapping, you will only be running on about 2GB. edit - If you are running one, it might still be at 3GB, although once you take all the other devices into account it's probably around 2.5.

*Windows Xp Pro 32 bit (soon moving to 64 bit)
*8800 gts oc'ed
*1x150 gig 7200 rpm sata drive with 8mb of cache/buffer- get around 50 MB/s average
*4x150 gig 10,000 rpm raptor x's with 16 mb cache/buffer each in raid 10 using mid-end adaptec raid controller - get around 140 MB/s average, 172 MB/s max
*Q6600 quad core default 2.4 ghz oc'ed to 3 ghz
*4 gigs ddr2 800 ram oc'ed to near ddr2 1000
*HT omega striker 7.1 surround sound card (nice features and sound for price).
Misc:
*720p projector at 100"
*20" crt monitor
*700 watt surround sound 6.1 receiver
*500 watt reciever for two dedicated subs
*total surround sound system goes to 9 hz to 20,000 hz with no holes in range

I use the single 150 gig drive as my os drive. My raid 10 is separated into 2 volumes, one is a fat32 volume with my pagefile on it, and the other is an ntfs volume with all my programs on it.
I hope you don't mind, but i also listed some misc items. To me they the same as my pc specs since my pc doubles as a home theater pc with the rest of the system. I'm soon going to upgrade to 8 gigs of ddr2 1000 ram and go for 64 bit windows.
Though, if anyone here is a performance nut, you may be interested that before i setup my raid 10 recently i decided to setup a 4 drive raid 0 with 4 raptor x's.
My access times were 8.1 ms and achieved 326 MB/s throughput, a relatively nice combination of the two stats. However, my intention was never to raid 0 them of course, that's data loss just waiting to happen. Still I'm willing to accept 140 MB/s average with a max throughput of 172 MB/s with the same access times in raid 10, redundancy and a speed increase :-).

isn't it solved by running a 64 bit OS?

Nope, because just like the giant garbage ball in Futurama and Y2K, the 3GB-4GB range for devices seemed so insanely high that back in the day that when it would finally came time for us to use sticks of ram to take up those memory areas, the guys who came up with it figured it would be the year 60 BILLION and we would be living on Mars in space domes anyway.

32bit Operating systems can use up to 3GB, after which is where all the reserved memory addresses are for your PC devices. The 64 bit operating systems fix this by moving the memory addresses up to 16,384 gigabytes, kinda like shooting the ball of garbage back into space in Futurama. From what I understand the problem is that many of the devices we have today are still designed to look for the 3-4GB range, and so to be backward compatible any RAM between 3 to 4 GB range still can't be used and is not touched by Vista. If you have a 64bit operating system you must have MORE than the 4GB range for it to be seen.

Luckily Motherboards are getting around this by including a feature called "Memory Hole Mapping" which tricks the devices into looking at the 16,384'th gigabyte instead of the 3-4GB range, allowing you to use the true 4GB. That's why it's important to make sure your motherboard supports it and that it is turned on.

Another reason it is important is that if you have 4GB with no memory mapping turned on, you lose 1GB to the reserved memory area of your 1GB video card (down to 3GB) then on top of that have all the memory addresses for every other device in your PC (possibly another 500MB, down to about 2.5GB). Without a MoBo that supports memory mapping or having it turned on, you are seriously gimping your computer.

we do database/computation related stuff at work - i get some bragging rights but only for machines that will eventually get shipped to customers.

the one right now
quad core 3gz
16gb ram
4x750gb drives raid 10 = 1.5 tb

we are just shrinking the customer's win2008 server partition to try out an smp emt64 bit linux. unfortunately no graphics card to speak of since its a server.
