I'd like to take an opportunity for us to share the, although old, important links we've come across in our Internet lives. Four years ago someone posted this link on GameDev: http://lifeaftertheoilcrash.net and it changed my life. I expect most of you have at least one life-changing bookmark, so let's have it out! (One link per person please, to encourage focus.)

I'd be interested in hearing you describe in more detail what kind of changes the link actually caused in your life.

Hmm, I wasn't expecting that reaction, to be honest! If you take any meaningful part of LATOC seriously then you get one hell of a reality check. My reaction was to spend a few hours every week for the last four years researching the background and interpreting current affairs in a richer context. Reading stuff like this, which I found as a result of LATOC, either makes you incredulous, terrified, withdrawn, or revolutionary. I'll leave it to your imagination which course my life took...

Thanks for the interest!

Now I'm hungry for everyone else's epiphanical links...

who needs a link... in the computer world you just need this...

ping 127.0.0.1

I ping, therefore I exist... or at least my NIC does.
There's no place like it.

:: I know, not funny, but I think it fits anyway.

oh, and http://www.tvtropes.org
it would be a link if the gdnet plugin worked with firefox 3 [sad]
There was a saying we had in college: Those who walk into the engineering building are never quite the same when they walk out.

Randy Pausch: The Last Lecture. It runs for an hour and a half minutes, but it's worth it. If anyone's interested, I have a high quality OGG version of that video.

Wow, that was a great & touching video. It makes me ask "how can I be a better person?" and this is a part of the many answers out there. Thanks for sharing!

I second that. I just watched it again a few days ago, and took some notes. Amazing stuff.

I have a tough time nailing down what my childhood dreams are... In 3rd grade I wanted to be an F-14 fighter pilot. In 6th grade, I wanted to be a game developer. I was inspired by playing Commander Keen and Sim City 2000...and I'm still pursuing that path.
But my dream has changed a bit. My truest dream is to inspire people to achieve greatness. The hardest question I'm trying to answer for myself is: "How do I put myself into a position where I can best inspire people to be the best people they can be?"
If I was a programmer writing code, I wouldn't directly influence many people. I wouldn't get much satisfaction or value from that. If that was my reason for not wanting to be a programmer, but I still wanted to develop games, then maybe I could try to be in a leadership position and inspire the programmers to do their best? That would mean I'd be a manager/team lead and that would let me influence up to maybe a dozen people? An entry level guy like me couldn't get that offered on a silver platter though.
If I was an officer in the military, I could lead and inspire hundreds of people. That's very appealing. But do I want to spend even more time in the military? I dunno. I could certainly carve myself a niche and take the military one step further towards technological superiority.
If I was to enter politics, I could inspire lots and lots of people with my vision. I'd want to be one of those politicians who actually meets with people, talks, listens and considers what they have to say. I'd want to give speeches and inspire people to do great things and show that it's possible.
If I was a professor, I could inspire hundreds of students throughout my lifetime. I could have those valuable one on one sit-down meetings and learn from, and teach students, to be great people.
If I ran a business, I could inspire every one of my employees to achieve their own goals in life, and I would have the financial power available to me to help them realize their dreams. I would love to sit down for an hour or two a day and drink coffee and talk with employees and learn about what they want in life and do my best to help them get that. whoo! I'd be the best boss evaaaar! profit margins be damned! If we break even and every employee achieves their dreams, its a massive success.
*sigh* too many options...
