Here's what I would like to do. I want a random arrangement of circles, over a period of time to come together and stop at a formation that I have arranged (say a triangle, square or any other shape comprised of circles.) Basically, it would be like videoing a game of pool/billiards/snooker then playing it in reverse. Like the following video:
Are there any methods to doing this - other than running circle-circle collisions with the associated physics on the initial formation, recording the subsequent interactions, and then playing it in reverse? If anybody needs any clarification of my intentions, then please let me know! Thanks in advance for replies.

Check out Chenney's paper on this topic from a "find the right initial configuration" approach (clicky) and Jovan Popovic's paper from an "as physicsy as possible" approach (clicky). Popovic's PhD thesis also covers this, but it's not available online AFAIK.
