well, probably not. but this thing comes online tomorrow. wikipedia So this machine, Large Hadron Collider, is going to shoot two protons at eachother at near the speed of light. Then see what happens. Sounds like something we could learn a lot from (no sarcasm intended). but i know some of you, in the back of your heads, are playing out the end of the world from this thing

The collisions that this thing will create actually occur every day in the upper atmosphere, so unfortunately, it's not going to open a portal to Zen for a head-crab invasion.

Although, just in case, it seems they are prepared for that situation.

By "tomorrow", don't you mean in two and a half hours? It's hard to translate between time zones.

I'm keeping an eye on the clock - to make sure it doesn't get sucked into a black hole at 5 p.m. local time [smile].

They aren't even colliding anything until October. Tomorrow they're just circulating beams.

Well, if this collision doesn't wipe us out, the high energy collisions might on the 21st of October...

But seriously, it does sound pretty cool :) What will happen I do wonder?

I for one plan to stay up and toast the LHC project at 2:30 AM, with a fine bottle of Hangar One vodka.

End of the world or not, this should be pretty interesting stuff.

Just look on the bright side. In appox. 2 hours, we'll all know if this black hole stuff that's been going around is true!
It doesn't matter if the black hole theory is true (assuming Hawking is right) because they're micro black holes, which would almost instantly evaporate due to their small size.
Also, these collisions happen every day and micro-black holes haven't killed us yet. The only thing special about the LHC collisions is that we will be watching the impact.

Fortunately, there's a handy website which tells us in real-time whether or not the world has ended: http://www.hasthelhcdestroyedtheearth.com/.

Hah, nice.
As everyone else has mentioned I can't wait to see what we get from this. It will hopefully end up proving (or disproving) various theories.
I don't think being disproved would necessarily be bad... I mean I'm sure it is for whomever is concerned, but at least they'll know whether they're right or wrong.

Nostradamus LHC prophecy

/**
Leave, leave Geneva every last one of you,
Saturn will be converted from gold to iron,
Raypoz will exterminate all who oppose him,(?)
Before the coming the sky will show signs.
Migrés, migrés de Geneue trestous,
Saturne d'or en fer se changera,
Le contre Raypoz exteriminera tous,
Auvant l'aruent le ciel signes fera.
*/

Don't know what to make of it.

Oh please [rolleyes]

Besides, if something goes really, really wrong with the LHC, then leaving Geneva won't help you very much...

Ooh I love fictional End of the World prophecies!

Incidentally, a German Professor has estimated that the experiment may create black holes that would take about 4 years to develop and destroy the earth!

Nothing special you say? Just some crackpot you say? Then let me lay this out for you.

The Mayan Calandar ends on 21st December 2012. 4 Years after we start collision testing!

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUN!!!

Here is the scientific analysis of the risks.
According to this, if they make a black hole, and if it doesn't evaporate, and if it manages to lodge itself inside the earth, then it will still take longer than the lifetime of the sun to destroy the planet.

Nostradamus LHC prophecy *snip*
Don't know what to make of it.
Make the same of it as any Nostradamus "prophecy" - charlatan tricks.

Also, Nostradamus seemed to have it in for Geneva:

Savoy near to go far, Lake of Geneva,
Very great preparations, return, confusion:
Far from the nephews of the late great "Supelman",
All of their following . . .

The chief of the army in the middle of the crowd
Will be wounded by an arrow shot in the thighs,
When Geneva in tears and distress
Will be betrayed by Lausanne and the Swiss.

Tears, cries and laments, howls, terror,
Heart inhuman, cruel, black and chilly:
Lake of Geneva the Isles, of Genoa the notables,
Blood to pour out, wheat famine to none mercy.

Before his father the child will be killed,
The father afterwards between ropes of rushes:
The people of Geneva will have exerted themselves,
The chief lying in the middle like a log.

The people of Geneva drying up with hunger, with thirst,
Hope at hand will come to fail:
On the point of trembling will be the law of him of the Cevennes,
Fleet at the great port cannot be received.

The shore of Lake Garda to Lake Fucino,
Taken from the Lake of Geneva to the port of 'L'Orguion':
Born with three arms the predicted warlike image,
Through three crowns to the great Endymion.

What exactly are we supposed to see on the LHC webcast? Is there anything to see?

So far so good - my feet haven't been sucked into the centre of the earth just yet.

Dunno, I can't get it to load [sad]

Oh well, supposedly the Big Event is over with by now anyways. I imagine we'll hear details over the next couple of days.
