Just wanted to get some thoughts on this problem. How do you go about rendering different types of objects? Do you have the effect work differently on different objects, or do you have different effects for different objects? What do i mean by different objects? well, such as a weapon object, which might look like class Weapon { Mesh Sounds params } class Prop { Mesh params } class SkinnedObject { Mesh Sounds params } etc etc Do you have an effect for each object? or do you have an effect work differently on different objects? which would involve the effect having to know of different types of objects. I gather that this is a very vague question, and probaly difficult to answer, but what is the aim?

A static mesh would have a different vertex shader than a skinned mesh, and therefore a different technique. (It could theoretically use the same technique with different runtime constants, but that would be inefficient.) Objects with different materials might use different pixel shaders, and so different techniques.

I hope this answers your question in some way.
