[java] Java Team Required

Original Post
I have been looking into the possibility of a Java based mmo. I know it is a radical move both writing and designing using certain aspects of Java but with the right team I believe a very playable, enjoyable, realistic and unique game will be the outcome. Unlike some (hack and Slash) mmo's written entirely in C++ the possibilities are endless when using Java as a jump off. Using Java to create this mmo will allow us to do many things such as building an extraordinarily large flowing map, control a line of sight that will allow creatures to attack or run upon directly seeing a player/creature dependent on experience of said player/creature while creating different lines of sight for every kind of creature in game, control both scent and sound activation of creatures whereas if the creature smells or hears a player/creature not in the line of sight the creature will turn to investigate, control the way creatures interact with each other (giving an example only) a carnivore will attack both herbivore or omnivore and an omnivore will attack both carnivore and herbivore. Along with all of these great inovations I suspect we may even be able to implement a realistic physics system to control the way both players and creatures react to the weather, elements such as fire, tides or even lava eruptions creating new landmasses within the map or devistating vast areas. I would also like to look into the possibility of an invention system whereas players can invent items dependent on the materials available or as discovered. The road to the success of this mmo will be long with many challenges ahead. The mmo will be designed to be socially stimulating with many features not seen anywhere else. I'm sorry to say that these positions will pro bono publico. While the team will not be paid initially for their hard work that is not to say that we can't work out some ongoing percentage of payment for individual members of the team as our mmo attracts a large player base. I hope this fact plus the credit for your work that may infact launch your career to a higher level, will attract many developers both experienced and new apply. I don't need advice at the moment. What I do need is a Java Team. If you have something to say about anything else but applying to join the team, please PM me in forum and I will try to answer you when I can. Note: all applications will be considered. New and studying developers most welcome to apply. Hope to hear from you soon Regards Funblocker [Edited by - Funblocker on October 7, 2008 5:39:47 PM]
I would have thought that C++ would be a better language to write this in seeing as it would run faster than if it were written in Java. I would also have thought that to write an MMO in Java would be a bad idea as it would make it much easier to reverse engineer the game and cheat by modifying the code.
Aside from that, good luck with the project.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone would point this out.
What I wont mention at this stage are the extra features I have been working on for about 2 years that just wont work in any other language but Java. what I will mention though is the realism of this mmo both sight and sound will be unlike anything anyone has ever seen to date, including a well known Java based game called Wurm Online.
Best regards

Thanks for the feedback. The mmo will be totally run server side which not only protects the code but allows people to play with only a minimum of download.
Thanks for wishing us luck. All we require is a good dev team to get the project underway.

In what ways does Multiverse fail to meet these requirements?
Nice plug for Multiverse there Antheus.
You think thats realism? Just wait till we get a team together and I will start posting progress reports along with screenshots, walkarounds and interactive features, we will then see whats real.

I don't see how any of what you mentioned could be implemented in Java, but not C++...
I would have to respectfully disagree with this. Java is a general purpose language, despite many unfounded assumptions that the VM is simply too slow it provides all that is necessary for such development.

I would also have to question this statement since as I stated above Java is a general purpose programming language and C++ is as well. I fail to see exactly how any program can have features that would not be able to be implemented in any general purpose programming language. The only reason I can think of that you might say this is Java support for reflection and C/C++'s lack of support but it is not impossible to do reflection in C/C++.
But all that aside I am interested in helping you along the way with your project. But at this time I can only devote a couple hours to help you get something up and running quickly. I believe that if you have at least something to start from then you may see more people willing to help you in your endeavor. I will PM you to discuss specifics.

I never said that Java couldn't do it, I'm just saying that unless I'm mistaken, you could do it with C++ just as easily.

I have found at least 2 people in this thread willing to be of an assistance. But your post lacks some basic info in my opinion:
WHO do you really need (2.. 3... 10 programmers? ...) ?
What kind of 'team' do you already have (What about artists? Designers? Sound and music) ?
What amount of work needs to be done (Do you have any plan?) ?
How do you want to market your game?
What will you bring into the team apart from the idea of making an MMO?
Thanks for the answers.

We have a "help wanted" forum for these kinds of posts. If you follow the forum FAQ and specify "no feedback" then it'll be actively enforced.
Thank you to all who applied. The positions have now been filled. However there is always the posibility of needing good people in the future, so leave your application in this thread and I'll get to it when I can.
Best Regards and thanks again.

Have you chosen which game engine you will be using yet? I suggest the following:
http://www.jpct.net/index.php
http://jmonkeyengine.com/
http://xith.org/
https://m3ge.dev.java.net/ - this one is for cellphones/smartphones, would be interesting to see an MMO that's compatible with both PCs and phones ;)

Thanks and yes, some of the features within the game will be accessible using your Cell/Mobile phone. Thanks also for the engine suggestions but as I have been working on my own for almost 2 years I think I will be sticking with my own.

If I was ever gonna make a MMO I would probably use a combination of Project Darkstar and maybe jMonkeyEngine (or just JOGL). So if you haven't got the network part working then I suggest you try out Project Darkstar.
