Hey guys, I've been programming for years, and I'm looking to get into creating some 2d games in C++ as a hobby. Right now I've been following some tutorials and creating some GUI based games that use Bitmaps for graphics, and I've been using wxWidgets. My overall goal (after working on smaller goals like Tetris and Pong....) will be to develop a side-scrolling Mario like platformer, and then even further, to develop a Final Fantasy Tactics-like Turn Based game. My question is... For those two overall goals mentioned, will a library like wxWidgets really cut it? Or do you have any other suggestions for what library I should look in to? I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so any library that makes 2d game creation slightly easier to work with is great. Thanks for any help! *EDIT* In addition, I've had my eye on the Allegro and Gosu libraries. Are those suitable for the "overall goal" projects mentioned above? Thanks!

Tetris and pong will probably do, but chances are that the more you push it, the more you will see it's limitations. A "real" hardware accelerated 2d library like sfml or hge probably will be better. If you really want to use wxWidgets, you can either roll your own library with OpenGL(advanced) or embed sfml.

I'm not exactly stuck on wxWidgets. I actually don't even plan on using wxWidgets for anything beyond a simple GUI interface for some convenient application.
Thanks for the recommendations and links. I'll check them out.

With wxWidgets, you'll have to basically build a 2d game library.

Popular (common) 2D game libraries include:
- Allegro
- Torque (from Garage Games)
- SDL
- Pygame
- PopCap Developer (developer.popcap.com)
- Haaf's Game Engine
- PTK
- FlatRedBall

Not all of them are free. Each have different strengths.
