Live action Dragonball movie...

But there was already a Dragonball live action movie....

It can't possibly be a great flick, but being a good one isn't impossible. For reference, I willingly saw Speed Racer and I liked it (though I'm afraid I'll hate it if I see it again).

I must admit that I thought the Transformers movie was going to be bad, but I ended up enjoying it. This though...I just can't see how it will be anything but a trainwreck of a movie. Then again, hopefully it will be terrible in a funny way (like the aformentioned Street Fighter movie).

Goku is just so wrong...

There are two anime shows that I really care about: Dragonball and Gundam. Now they've done Dragonball, and I just hope they stay away from Gundam.

Hated that movie very intently...they just pissed all over the transformers lore (the little that there is), and made a super generic teen flick/action movie crossover. With robots.

The good bit about Dragonball was that it was extremely silly, and it seems they've completely removed that from the film. That's the bit I'm most annoyed about.

And I've got no damn idea what source material they've been using for this film. If this is indeed based on Dragon Ball (not DBZ), then shouldn't Goku be a little kid? And what's with the modern day setting?

I don't quite get why you'd go to the bother of buying IP if you're just going to take the title and ignore the bulk of the rest. This is clearly a rental movie, and only once it's reached a weekly price rather than a daily new release. If it were a silly live action version of the manga or cartoon though I'd consider seeing in in the theatre.

At first, I'm inclined to agree. However, I really don't think this has as much to do with available IP as it does with fashionable trends. We all grew up with Transformers, X-Men, etc., and so now that's what we're paying to see. This is just the same as it's pretty much always been, going back to the vast majority of Hollywood productions throughout the twentieth century in every genre.

Trends, however, do have one very nice feature: Evolution. The fact that people will grow tired of these same themes and characters and stories will extend to the writers, producers, and directors who have creative control over them. And when there are expensive legal debacles like that of Watchmen, that just gives even greater impetus for change.

Or something, that's just my take on it. [smile]

(That kid from Spiderwick would be nigh-perfect if it's a kid's movie; not sure if they make him an adult.)
