Being able to clearly express your thoughts before writing anything will help more than any existing program!
GameMaker7 is an excellent program for giving you an idea of all the different types of 2D games that are popular.

Game Maker 7 is an absolutely great software for beginners to get started into programming.

It holds a very close syntax to C++.

I started programming from Game Maker 7 and moved to C++ from there. It will help you grasp the concept of programming without forcing you to learn harder things such as graphics api and such (which you can learn eventually).

It also is capable of bringing in functions from DLLs.

Considering the fact that you're a beginner, I would definitely recommend Game Maker 7 as the program for you.
