Sometimes, I go on a rant. Not on the internet, in real life. Nobody stops me. Should I tell my friends that they have permission to stop me? This is my shortest OP ever.

No. You should rant in real life. I find it the best way to do things.

Also, you should strive to insert some surreality into your life. If you see people recording something for serious business, you should run across their camera's viewport waving your hands and yelling various things.

It sounds quite amusing i know, but this is a serious problem and is starting to get me down. I need somehow to realise when I am on a rant and stop, but when im in rant mode, nobody has the spine / energy to tell me to stop or try to debate me. I suspect this is alienating people.

Also, I do make surreal stuff happen. Ever notice that room which has 2 windows on the outside of the building but when you go inside there are 3 windows? I did that.

Well, you've recognized there's a problem. What would cause it? Avoid that or temper it somehow. If it happens, count to three, take a deep breath, do whatever.

(I'm way outside my understanding, here. I'm far too lax in real life to go on a rant unless someone is screwing me out of something very valuable.)

What set this off is the systems programming lesson I had on Tuesday morning. We were being "taught" the C time library. I didnt like this at all. I went on a rant for several minutes about C being a primitive language. I then wrote a c++ wrapper around the C time functions. I then overloaded the > operator so I could compare times. And I did all this in a very loud manner, disrupting the lesson.

At no point did anybody say anything or stop me, including the tutor. It was not until later, after being told off in #gamedev, that I realised that the tutor had chosen C for a reason.

I kind of am - im paying £28k for an education and I have to think inside the box. But I now know that I am being a bit of an ass about it.

Wait... You went on a rant during class?

Fuck you. Yeah, I said it. You disrupted the class just because you didn't like the specific way the instructor chose to impart a lesson? I've disrupted class before, so it's not like I have a structural problem with that, but you have to be responsible and know that you are disrupting for a worthwhile reason. In my case, we were in week sixteen of a seventeen-week semester course on "Masculinity" in cinema, and we hadn't discussed a single work that wasn't representing white males. I upbraided the professor about this, and my class mates joined in - they all felt this way; where was the film in Asian American males, or the black male, or the essays on their representation and misrepresentation in cinema? She found time for us to watch the Italian version of Hercules, but couldn't show one Sidney Poitier movie? We watched Pumping Iron and Pumping Iron 2: The Women, but no Game of Death?

The worst part, based on our conversation in #gamedev, is not that you were wrong, but that you were ignorant of how wrong you might be - you were basically throwing a temper tantrum like a spoiled infant.

Your real-life friends are not going to tell you to shut up, as a general rule of thumb. They're just going to think you're an asshole, and try to minimize interaction with you.

Grow up.

Well, I guess this sums up the problem. I agree with most of what you say here, and accept that there is a problem with my attitude. To my credit, I've been consulting people for the last few hours regarding this issue and came up with a few solutions. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

count to ten man

i know in my lectures at uni this mature student who thought he was the shit would sit at the front and interrupt the lecturer literally a few times per minute

one lecturer, after two years, eventually let him know in front of everyone that he was in fact stupid, none of his arguments or suggestions had ever been right and was quite frankly annoying everyone

that solved it for him, maybe when you consider the fact for public embarassment or the fact that it probably irritates people more than it would irritate you if you hadnt said anything youll realise the benefits of not shouting at the guy whos going to be awarding your grades

let friends know to stop you definitely, but only if its inappropriate, ie they can stop you in a lecture or lab, but having a rant about something in a pub or at home is fine, then you know to listen to them as oposed to them just being assholes. when im in a pub id be pretty angry if someone stopped one of my rants like!

I think you have taken an important first step of identifying that you have a problem. Get your friends to try something simple as a method of telling you to pause and think. Instead of trying to argue with you get them to utter a simple key phrase like "Flame on!". It won't mean anything to strangers/class mates but it will let you know that they think you have gone into rant mode.

If this is a particular problem in class then I think you would get respect from your tutors if you went to them and explained the problem. Asked them to calmly interupt you and ask you to discuss it with them after class. That gives you a chance to calm down at that moment but also the chance to talk through it after class and find out why the tutor made the choice they did.

Sorry ;) This is, by the way, to indicate that if I were their classmate, I would point and laugh. *coughs*
