Can you buy a guitar which has no body, just a neck and a socket to plug in your cable? If so, does it have a special name I could search for on Google?

Steinberger / hohner travel guitars / bass.

Headless, body-less.

I'd imagine that with any less body (and possibly even with that model) you'd have trouble keeping it facing the right way. I find that part of what the body does is help brace the thing and was reminded of a homebrew silent dobro that had a similar problem.

I've been thinking about getting a cheap electric lap steel guitar for travel and quiet practice, but I'm guessing that's not the kind of guitar you're looking for. The Tranjo is also interesting, but costs more than my cheap "real" banjo...

Yeah, they actually come with a 'coat hanger' thing in place of the upper horn to keep the balance right.

But They were, and are very popular noneless (especially in the 80's :)). The original model came with a graphite / carbon fiber neck, very light and strong. And the strings are a pain (double ball ends), as for most headless designs.

You can only take so much away from a guitar before it either doesn't sound like a guitar anymore or it becomes and entirely different instrument.

Mid way through writing this post I decided to Google "travel guitars" and I found this beauty. Maybe this is the kind of thing you are looking for? ( they do have different models but no headless... sorry )

Pirunviulu (Devil's Violin) in Finnish. [smile] A rather popular instrument among kids, usually just and ordinary saw of some sort. Beyong that, I guess the next step is to use just Theremin. [smile]
