what is a good piece of back software? i am running windows but i plan mostly to run it on my linux server. Something that can run via cmd line remotely and execute on a schedule (i use cron to do this?) and only keeps the dif would be plus'es

Check out Acronis true Image. It allows you to do the, 'dif' you speak of. At the moment I have a base image that I revert to if my system ever gets messed up.

I just pop in the boot CD and I can select an image that I want to restore from my USB drive or from other CD media if I want to :)

Check Acronis for Linux compatibility because I'm using it with windows.

I'm using Carbonite. Windows only though.
