I am also a programmer looking for a side job (unpaid) for experience in game development. I am a Junior in college studying Computer Science with a 4.0 GPA. Most of my experience is in C++. I anyone is looking for an apprentice or an extra hand please PM me. I am a great learner.

Already part of the professional industry I see. In that case, I'd be very interested to know how you feel about a 3D adventure game being made in Java using jME ;)
