Hey, I'm wondering how moving map elements, like doors opening when a player is nearby, or an elevator going up when a player is on it, are done. I'm guessing its all scripted, but how is the movement itself scripted? Thanks!

Depends on your definition of 'scripted'. Some games do indeed use scripting languages. Others don't really provide scripts in the sense of code, but level-designers can 'script' these game objects in a graphical editor. Often, the functionality of these game objects is still hard-coded, but made easy to use and reuse for designers.

If you really want to know, pick up an editor for a modern game (Unreal & Half-Life series for example), follow some tutorials and experiment a bit. That's the best way to find out. :)
