Hi guys, I'd like to model a house for a little game. What is a good way of creating house models? I could use a 3d modeling program but Im sure there is something out there that was created just for this purpose. The thing is I want to model it according to the specifications of my own house, which means I need a certain degree of fine tuning capabilities. Anyone know of any software, commercial or free, preferably the latter. -CProgrammer

Architectural drafting software is what is designed for house modelling, but they tend to be pretty expensive piece of software. AutoCad Architecture and 3ds Max Design are specifically designed for architectural needs. Sketchup could work pretty well actually though, and it is much cheaper.

That being said, really any 3d modeling software will work. You just want to make sure to decide up front what your unit conversion rates are up front.

Hammer is the editor used for creating maps for Half-Life2, Counter Strike, and all other Source games. Its free, and very intuitive to use.

The question is what format does it need to be in?

Autocad was built explicitly for that purpose, but its expensive and with a steep learning curve.

Well Autocad looks very nice and its from the same company as 3d studio so Im sure it has a great use interface. I couldnt find a price though but Im guessing its in the thousands range :(

Wait, what? Architectural software is designed for house modeling, but not the type of house modeling that goes into little games, or even games at all, really. Unless you're a really terrible modeler, it will take far more time to learn how to use new software than it will take to just model it in the software you know.

Just do a little research, lay it out, then model it in any modeling software.

Yeah, because 3ds Max Design is worlds different from from 3ds Max and AutoCad doesn't at all export out to formats used by other modelers. [rolleyes] The OP asked about software specifically designed for modeling houses and well, that is exactly what those softwares are designed for. I was pointing out that they do exist, but probably aren't feasible for him use due to costs.

Way to actually read a post.

I did read your post, and my reply wasn't aimed at it (hence the lack of a quote). It was aimed at the direction of the whole thread. Especially the last post in it.

Way to take something personally.

Nothing personal was taken. I was just reiterating why there isn't really anything wrong with using software specifically designed for architectural purposes. You get the same results, but have an easier path getting there. 3ds Max Design, for instance, operated almost exactly as the standard edition of 3ds Max does but includes additional features for dimensioning.
