So I was working through some tutorials from www.cokeandcode.com , and I found out that some of the code had to be refactored. The code was from 2003, I was wondering, what's today's API for making 3d and 2d Java? I want to start on the right foot, so I'm wondering what do you use? JOGL , Java3d (i think that's gone?) , LWJGL (?) , Swing , AWT - or is there some new fangle graphics API now that everyone uses? I'm not so interested in Game Engines right now, just the graphics. Cheers, Dan

LWJGL is still the most mature and reliable library for game development in Java these days. Java3d is pretty much dead, and Swing is too slow. Jogl/Joal/JInput is an alternative to LWJGL but they're considerably less well maintained and less reliable.

If you were refering to the Space Invaders tutorial, then I think there's an up-to-date version on the demos page. If you have specific problems then post them here and I'm sure people will help (or go to the #lwjgl IRC channel).

I use JOGL, and to be honest. It's learning curve is perfect(IMO). Small things, are small code, big intricate things are big intricate code. You can check C/C++ OpenGL code and it is pretty easily transferrable so there's plenty of code if you know how to look.

I'd go with what OrangyTang said however, because I've never use LWJGL, and from what I've heard it's very reliable and well liked.

And yes Swing is too slow for games.

I've used LWJGL and I like it a lot. On nehe.gamedev.net all the tutorials are translated to LWJGL.
Beside the openGL part, it also has a great way to control the user input.

If you want to "cheat" you can also use jMonkeyEngine which is build on LWJGL.

ive used both jogl and lwjgl. i realy dislikes jogl's way of forcing me to code a certain way and i also had issues such as my framerate just halving for no reason and random crashes.. lwjgl had none of that and i got about 5% more perfomrance out of it
