I want to change the debug output level for Direct3D but it's grayed out. I went to Control Panel -> DirectX -> Direct3D, and the "Debug/Retail D3D Runtime" box is grayed and set to Retail Version, which is stopping me from changing the output level. Is there any way to un-gray this? By the way, I've got DirectX 10 (Vista) installed but I'm programming with DirectX 9 if that makes any difference. Much appreciated.

I've only seen that happen if you use an out of date SDK; I had it happen when the runtime was DX9.0c and I was using the DX9.0b SDK. You can't downgrade DirectX, which is what would be happening if you were able to change from the DX9.0c to the DX9.0b runtimes. Make sure you have the latest SDK (November 2008 I believe), and try re-installing it if you do.
