SWAT obviously.. since Delta Force doesn't exist ;)

Delta force most certainly does exist, and they would wipe the floor with SWAT.
SWAT = Elite Police Force
Delta = Elite Military Force

Which has the better training, equipment, and much, much larger selection pool?

Let's assume both troups are equally top-notch and have comparable equipment, and the defenders have only a few seconds/minutes time for fortifying themselves.

I wonder how the different tactical strengths of both units play out. I could imagine that SWAT is better in entering a room and sweeping it, whereas DF is better in fortification.

I also think that DF would win due to overall better training. I still hope that someone can make some points for SWAT.

I think that SWAT would win by a small margin when on the attacking side since they train specifically as a team for entering scenarios. Delta is more general and varied training so they might not have the same experience handing opponents who expect them. With the equipment restriction removed though, I vote Delta since they probably have better equipment from the army.

GIGN would win :P
They're no posers! :P

(hey, I'm kidding okay?)
Delta Force sounds like something Chuck Norris would be on - so my money goes on Delta Force.

The reason SWAT stands for "Special Weapons And Tactics" is because they use... military-grade weapons and tactics! And they are very very well trained. On top of that, many SWAT members were previously in special forces.

Although I still stand by my argument that this is a silly question that is comparable to asking if a plane can take off from a treadmill.

On the more realistic subject of Batman: Neither side gets him. He works alone. (yes, I refuse to accept the existence of Robin).

I think this entire topic is absolutely ridiculous [rolleyes]

Obvious whichever side has Jack Bauer will win.

I'm figuring you already knew about this, but just in case: The Delta Force.

They generally stick with CQB weapons which means sub-machine guns and shotguns, both which are lacking in armor penetration.

It really depends on what cities SWAT team you're talking about. I'm sure that the SWAT team for Los Angeles, or New York City have plenty of ex-military and have excellent training, but the vast majority of SWAT teams are for small cities and towns (considering there are a lot more small towns then big cities. Which means, on average, your typical SWAT team has a lot less money (for equipment), and a lot less training.

Here is some interesting information on the weapons available to Delta Force.

Delta's unconventional nature also allows its members to carry highly-customized weapons. Like any other military unit, Delta has dedicated mission tasks including snipers and squad machine gunners. The flexibility of Delta means that weaponry is quite varied and often depends on the mission at hand or personal preference of the individual operators. Below is a list of common or highlighted weapons; the list should not in any way be considered complete, and it should also be noted that Delta Force operators often have access to the entire armory of the United States Army.

Whereas SWAT teams are limited by their city budget.
These days Delta types have lots of real combat experience so they have the edge. Nonetheless, the defending team wins every time because defense is that much easier.

That's a lie.

I've played rainbow 6 several times, and they DO have assault rifles and other armor penetrating weapons!
They do lack the 50 cal sniper, but I don't think that it would be that useful in infantry combats anyway..
