How do programs like Xfire work?

I was just wondering, how do they create overlays over existing windows?

Typically they use DLL Injection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLL_Injection) to employ code hooking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooking) to hook into the rendering API calls by the target program to display their overlays.
