How can I quickly put a loading screen up, just a bitmap of somesort or something before I hit my render loop? My problem is that right now I have all my models in an ASCII format, since I am debugging and tracing what's going on. The application can take 30 seconds or more to load everything up. I can't really just render something using DirectX too easily, as my resource loading happens before the main render loop starts. So all the rendering calls don't get hit. What's a quick way if just letting the user know, "I'm working! I didn't crash!"

Load the loading screen first, separately from all your other resources. Then display it using a completely separate render loop from your main render loop, running in its own thread. If you wanted clean and elegant, you shouldn't have gone into game programming. [grin]

You could use a simple static control with SS_BITMAP and load a bitmap from the ressources into it.
