Resolution target

I'm working on a 2d isometric game in opengl using textured quads. My question is about what resolutions my game should support. I like how the game looks and feels best in 800x600, and I'd like to hardcode it into 800x600, adding vertical black bars to the sides of the screen if the user should choose another resolution. My concern is that as resolutions continue to increase that 800x600 may not be supported by future displays. Is these any merit to my concerns?

You should make your game support any resolution available in the system, period.

You're using OpenGL, so things are simpler: make a virtual resolution of 800x600 (set it up with glOrtho() or whatever you're using) and it'll scale with whatever resolution the game is working at. Plain simple. Though beware of different resolution ratios - any resolution different than 4:3 will make things look bad. Your game will have to take that into account (adapting the virtual resolution to the ratio is a good start - also remember that you can specify negative values for the limits!), but I guess that's where the "vertical bars" idea kicks in.
Don't pay much attention to "the hedgehog" in my nick, it's just because "Sik" was already taken =/ By the way, Sik is pronounced like seek, not like sick.
