Team name: Genesis Team Project name: Genesis World Brief description: This is a very new project that will build a 3D game world named Genesis. Target aim: Be able to build a working prototype of the game using test models. Graphics, Physics, Network and Sound should show alpha-level quality. Be able to deliver alpha within 12 (1->12) months. The next 12 months (13->24) will focus more on getting the right elements in place rather than building core parts. Month 25 should be preparation month for Beta. Team members should agree to work part-time only if they have time for it. Compensation: There is no pay. If and when the project earns revenue (not profit), the amount will be evenly distributed right away among the team members. Profit (retained earnings) will be realized after 24 months of consistent dedicated attention to the project. Stocks will be issued and liabilities will have to be accounted. Technology: DirectX/OpenGL, RakNet, PhysX/Bullet. Talent needed: 1) Programmers, artists, writers. 2) Persons who can get angel investor(s). 3) Marketing/Bloggers/Buzz makers. See website for details. Team structure: Current: Me. (C++,Adobe Flash,SQL Server, ASP/PHP/DotNet, RakNet, PhysX, DirectX, Blender 3D Artist, Photoshop, Texture Artist, Documentation Writer) The Dev Team To Be Formed: Programmers(3), artists(2), writer(1), Sound/Vocal(1). Website: http://hexapix.vpscustomer.com/ --> A Dedicated Server with RakNet+Client code. Contacts: dlangdev@yahoo.com Previous Work by Team: None. First time to work with people using the internet. Additional Info: I have a dedicated server (see website) with several test programs in it, mostly RakNet code. The client code are mostly test programs that talk to the server. It would be better to get input from members on how they would like to move forward. I've been working on it in my spare time for >= two years and would like to test the waters here. See demo video here:

I would like a better discription of the game.

@Eagle11,

The Genesis project has no story/plot yet. I was thinking of setting-up the story based on the kind of shading that will be used known as Gooch+Hatch+Diffuse+Cubemap.

That's pretty much it for now, if you have any story that will fit the shading tech it would be nice to read about it.

By the way, the test/demo programs I have has a story based on Karateka. Though it really looks bad at the moment because it has tons of proof-of-concept garbage thrown into it.

It's very hard to get people interested in a project when you haven't told them anything about the project. You may not have a story, and that's fine. But obviously you have some sort of idea of the world in your head or else you wouldn't be posting about it. Tell us what your idea is. Right now it just sounds to me like "hey, let's go make an engine!".
I'm learning, just like the best of us...Ok, now assume a spherical cow... :)

Good question, I still have no clue what the story of Project Genesis is.

Maybe by next week, I will ask my kid about what kind of game he would like to play and the story that will interest him.

In the meantime, I will doing some rough sketching of the scenery along with some possible characters.

How can you do any sketch work with out first having a story or at the very least know what genre the story will be? Is it going to be Scifi, fantasy, mix of the 2, or something completely different? Whats the setting going to be modern day, future, past, or historic. All these things will have a huge impact on your sketches for scenery, characters, and everything else in the game.

My advice is to get your story done or at least write up a summery of the story so at least know some basics of the game. With out this you could sketch up a bunch of fantasy style scenery and then the story could end up being Scifi and the sketches would no longer work for the game.

@022949: Yep, it's now on Steam. We should be chatting soon, though I play a lot of L4D--a time sink--for sure. Anyway, join me up there once you are on Steam.

@EmpireProductions: Thanks for the comment. Iim still playing around with Photoshop+Blender to see whether it will be sci-fi, noir, medieval, etc. I'll also look at some anime characters as well. I made two good bone rigged character models and was able to use that in the Karateka-like test game. I gained a lot of experience with that and most probably influence me when I go forward with Genesis. Will let you know in two weeks as I don't spend a lot of time on it at the moment, I still have this proof-of-concept I have to do. Regarding the plot, I was thinking of simply focusing on the present and add more as the gameplay moves forward. Sort of like hiding the history. It's all about the present conflict.

It really doesn't help to give nothing but technical information on a project. For all we know, the game is about a certain progressive rock band.

Lol, why people post when they have not a concrete idea of the game?

LOL 2X, Take it easy fellas as things will be going a bit slow for now. I'm still setting-up the materials for the DD. Good thing there's a lot of resources here...

You need to have a design document, have a clear vision of what you want to do (if you dont know no one else will).
I dream hard of helping people.

Bummer, I've been dealing with that since last week. Up time seems to be very fragile and I don't know why VPSLand doesn't know. The dedicated server is less than a month old. Got SQL Server up and running yesterday and it is now set up correctly. I don't have any complaints about the setup, it's just that uptime is not 99.9%, it's more like 70%.

I'll wait and see if VPSLand is the way to go. Otherwise...bail out and move to the next provider.

On the plus side, the server is flawless in handling RakNet test programs. I'm very satisfied with the game client and RakNet server code. I've give a thumbs up on that.

Thanks for reminder. The Design Doc will probably start moving by next week. Need to do more sketching. Need to figure things out, though I'll probably take the Grim Fandango DD style. We'll see when the week rolls around. For sure, things will move very slow as I have a day job which keeps me very busy.

I understand.

Hmm, first thing you need a clearer vision. I wouldn't dare post my project on here without giving links to ideas, some concept art (even if you don't have a concept artist some crappy sketches from the idea person can go a long way). Also anything, any details that you can think of, include. You need to try to sell you project to other people because they will be investing their time in it, and time is money. So try to sell your ideas more and get people really hyped and excited about it. If your not ready to do that, you shouldn't be posting a help thread.

Here is a screenshot of the test game. Just to let you guys know things are moving and are making progress in many areas. Door is still open for those who are interested, once the position is filled, that's pretty much it.

here is the link to the sample sound...
