Good 2-Player Games?

How could you leave out Red Alert 2 and C&C: Gold?!?

Other than that: GTA2, Soldat, Company Of Heroes, Starcraft, Rise Of Nations and Empire Earth would be my suggestions.

For some reason my wife really likes a good action rpg. We played Diablo 2 many times, and the Baldur's Gate games for the PS2. More recently we've played Titan Quest and it's expansion and Sacred 2.

Well, not necessarily the same thing, but I've been playing Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars with my daughter (3yrs old), and to my surprise it's actually quite enjoyable!
The games, not surprised about playing with my daughter being enjoyable :)

I was going to suggest the Civilization series, but then I remembered I played that over a LAN with a friend and it successfully redefined the word "boring".

I would maybe suggest Rome:Total War or such like. Unlike other RTSs where the person with the most money can spam until they win, Rome:TW has you choosing your army before the battle starts and you fight with what you have, with no reinforcements. I find that a lot more fun because it encourages you to be resourceful with what you have instead of amassing £££ and spamming cheap units until the enemy folds. Whenever I've played C&C online with high ranked players that's all they do; I've never seen any true and intelligent skill.

Bear in mind that I'm referring to the quick battle mode (or whatever it's called, I don't have my copy on me right now) and not the campaign which IIRC isn't multiplayer anyway. Rome Total War is approaching five years old and should be cheap, plus it's on Steam alongside the other Total War games so you don't even need to track down a disc.

Ah, I forgot about RA2 actually, I'll have to give that a go. She doesn't like any of the GTA games or Starcraft; I'll look into Rise of Nations and Empire Earth too.

Yeah, we both have Civ 2, but I suspect that'd take a full day to play multiplayer.

If you're into retro gaming there are plenty. Bubble Bobble, Bomberman, Lemmings, Worms, Cannon Fodder, Metal Slug, D&D tower of doom, King of Dragons, Geometry Wars, ...

And of course, Left 4 dead. It's a FPS, but not just your average frag fest. I'd keep an eye on Diablo III, but it's gonna be a while.

EDIT : Most of the old school games have been re-incarnated in some way.

There's always Bennu, coming soon on the 360...

gunbound. It's a worms like artillery game.

You could always try the age old classic: Chess.

Hide and Seek

I was introduced to Supreme Commander (Forged Alliance) a couple of weeks ago. Easily one of the best RTS-games I've ever played. You should be able to find it cheap these days too.

Civ4 is actually pretty fun for multiplayer, imo. You can turn on "Quick" mode where the game only lasts something like 120 turns and also simultaneous mode, which really helps speed things up. I've played a full game with these settings in around 4-5 hours before...
