Get a good book to guide you through the language. Write some smaller programs like primitive games or silly apps. Consult your book or a programming forum when you get stuck. Write bigger programs/games using more advanced techniques. Challenge yourself with harder problems and algorithms.

The best way to learn to program in C++ is to start learning to program in C++.
It is I, the spectaculous Don Karnage! My bloodthirsty horde is on an intercept course with you. We will be shooting you and looting you in precisely... Ten minutes. Felicitations!

That's really weird cause I have a friend named Michael Hughes, and since my name is Michael Bradshaw, everyone just called us by our last names. And we often said his name as Hughesy. I haven't heard of other people doing that too. Cool!

My Tip-of-the-Day would be to make sure you really learn to program in C++ before you move onto using any APIs. For example, there are lots of game engines out there, and if you're on Windows there is the Win32 API. Don't get into these until you understand what it is you're programming. It's really easy to want to jump ahead and get into more advanced programming with the hopes of creating a really cool, pretty program. Be patient. Spend a good amount of time doing console programming before moving onto more advanced things. You can make tetris, tic-tac-toe, hang man, a maze game, text RPGs, and loads of other things with just a console program. If you jump ahead into trying to use more advanced APIs without having a firm understanding of the basics in C++ it will take you a lot longer to progress.
